Ms Hazel Poa, the secretary-general of National Solidarity Party (NSP), is stepping down due to health problems.
Ms Poa, 43, made her request to step down 2 months ago but NSP asked her to take some time off to rest and to re-consider her decision.
After 2 months, she has not recovered and made the request again to step down from her secretary-general position. She made the request to NSP’s CEC and it was approved at its regular monthly closed-door meeting yesterday (19 Sep).
NSP president Sebastian Teo told the media, “The secretary-general’s job is very tough, we really need people with time, energy and stamina to do the day-to-day duties. She felt she could not recover in the near future. We want to thank her for her past efforts.”
However, she will continue as a council member in the CEC.
Both she and her husband contested in the Chua Chu Kang GRC in 2011 GE as opposition candidates. They used to study at Cambridge University.
Ms Poa became secretary-general in June 2011 and was elected for a second term in April this year. Her husband is the NSP’s organising secretary, and will remain in his post.
It is not made known who will replace her. Currently, the first and second assistant secretary-general are Mr Reno Fong and Ms Nicole Seah respectively.
Mr Teo said the party expects to elect a new secretary-general at the next party congress which is about a month from now.
