A viral video of the ‘harassing’ tactics of a local debt collectors has been circulating online and generating discussion about whether debt collectors are allowed to act is such a way.

The video showed three men, one identifying himself as “Xiao Long”, knocking on the door of a debtor called Jonathan. The three were seen shouting and banging on the door and saying things like “You’d better come out to talk. Don’t make me angry or I will do something to you. If you want to call the police, call them now!”

The collectors were seen shouting in English, Mandarin and Hokkien and threatening the debtor saying “If you don’t open the door now, I will come back at 8am tomorrow and make sure you can’t go out or go to work.”

Now, the debt collection agency JMS Rogers explained that the three men seen in the video were field agents of its licensee DZ Global and they were acting perfectly within their legal means.

JMS rogers explained in a statement that “All our licensed debt collectors are properly trained before they work in the field and their modus operandi do not involve physical attacks or property destruction.”

DZ Global also clarified that the debt collection shown in the video happened at 8pm and all collectors involved were acting within the confines of the law.

They also shared that the debtor they were trying to collect from had taken S$23,021 from a mentally handicapped person on the pretext of setting up a business but had actually spent it for his own leisure.

The debt collection agency was engages to recover part of that money.

“DZ Global has to take a firm stance during collections to ensure that our clients get their bad debts back. This is not a full video of the entire incident as the police arrived shortly after and the debtor opened the door. We then proceeded to discuss the matter amicably in a calm manner,” DZ Global explained.
