Four critically ill hospital patients in China have received vital organs donated by the family of a young woman who died on Friday from pregnancy complications in Eastern China.

Her heart, liver and kidneys had been transplanted in the four patients, the City Express newspaper reports.

Cultural attitudes impede organ donations in China

Due to a shortage of organs, surgeons over the past two decades have found ways to use “sub-optimal” or diseased livers for transplants.

Two other patients who had lost their sight will receive her corneas soon.

The 21-year-old mother, who was named in the report, gave birth in February to twin boys who were more than a month premature.

She suffered acute fatty liver of pregnancy, which was a rare, life-threatening complication, according to her hospital in Jiaxing, Zhejiang province.

She lapsed into a coma after giving birth by caesarean section and never regained consciousness.

Organ donation remains a taboo in traditional Chinese culture. Keeping the remains as complete as possible was regarded being respectful to the deceased.

The woman’s family said they did not hesitate to donate her organs. In their opinion, it was a way to extend her life.
