Vietnamese women, teen girls breathe fire for living at expense of own health
TUOI TRE NEWS UPDATED : 03/04/2017 09:05 GMT + 7 A number of poor women and young teenagers have been giving more heat, literally, to sidewalk beer stalls across Ho Chi Minh City, performing fire-breathing acts as a means to eke out a living, despite the obvious health hazards. People clinking beer mugs at sidewalk pubs across the city, particularly in the downtown area, are familiar with street performers who give performances that include dancing like the late ‘king of pop’ Michael Jackson, in an effort to capture diners’ attention and then sell candy or lottery tickets. Fire-dancing and fire-breathing have been the latest additions to the performers’ repertoire in recent years. A handful of street performers, some as young as 11, have jumped at the chance to make a living by performing dangerous, awe-inspiring fire-breathing stunts over the past few years. Despite frequently suffering blistered lips and tongues, and risking serious burns, itchy, flaky skin, poor appetites and marked weight-loss, they remain undeterred from their hazardous occupation. Among them are three teenage boys who have worked together over the past four years and formed their own unofficial fire circus. During a recent performance on Nguyen Thi Thap Street in District 7, Ha, 14, the group’s leader, made fire while Thai, 11, held it in his mouth and Tong, 11, danced with the flame by swinging his body and manipulating a torch. The trio normally cycle to their performance venues which are sidewalk pubs in Districts 7 and 8 from 6:00 pm to 4:00 am in the morning, when their peers are sound asleep. Among the three youths, Ha is the only one to have attended school, dropping out after finishing the first grade, while the other two have never been. Ha is also the most fortunate in that his parents are still alive, while the other two boys are both orphaned. Ha taught himself the fire-breathing art before passing it on to the two neighboring children and forming the group to earn a living. At around 11:00 pm one day, sidewalk pubs on Bui Vien Street, in the backpacker quarter in District 1, were packed, and teeming with locals and visitors alike. Out of nowhere came a shout and everyone turned round to see a lanky woman standing on the street, breathing fire with the imposing gait of a dragon. After three exhalations, the woman’s jacket flap was soaked in kerosene, but, impervious to the danger, she continued to pick up the glowing embers with her bare hands and hold fire in her mouth. The woman is 37 year-old Vo Thi Hoa, known as ‘fire-circus Hai’ among her street performing colleagues. A few days earlier, an against-the-wind exhalation had caused one of her fire balls to boomerang back at her. By a stroke of luck she was spared from any serious burns. Hoa continued with her fire-breathing performances a few days later. Her scorched hair, swollen lips, and swarthy complexion due to constant exposure to fire give Hoa a haggard look. After a series of fire-breathing gigs on Bui Vien Street, Hoa flopped down on the sidewalk of De Tham Street nearby. “I’ve suffered a valvular heart disease for almost 10 years. I keep running short of breath blowing fire like this, so I must rest once in a while so that I can continue until the wee hours,” she explained. Hoa used to peddle chewing gum to foreign tourists, but faced tough competition. She then switched to fire-breathing on the advice of her ‘coworkers.’ “I’m really scared, but I have no choice but to accept the dangers. The thought of rent, food and my kids’ education keeps me going,” Hoa said. Previously, the market for street fire performances around Ho Chi Minh City was dominated by thugs. Vietnam joins world's happiest economies
By VnExpress March 4, 2017 | 07:00 pm GMT+7 Bloomberg's Misery Index of inflation and unemployment has found that many Asian economies are in a relatively good place. Vietnam has joined other Asian neighbors in a group of the world's happiest economies thanks to its low inflation and unemployment, according to Bloomberg’s Misery Index revealed on Friday. The country made its debut in the list this year at number 12 globally. The expanding index, which did not feature Vietnam and several other markets last year, aims to reveal the happiest and most miserable economies in the world. A year full of political shocks has taken its toll on a number of economies worldwide, especially in Europe, but Asia has generally performed very well in this index. Add Iceland and Denmark in the middle of the regional list below and you'll have the world's top 12. continue reading here http://e.vnexpress.net/news/business...s-3550346.html

Vietnam's caffeine thirst puts it in world's top growing coffee markets
By Ho Binh Minh March 3, 2017 | 04:03 pm GMT+7 The Southeast Asian nation ranks only behind Indonesia, Turkey and India in retail value growth. Vietnam has one of the world's fastest growing retail coffee markets, trailing only behind Indonesia, Turkey and India, a global market intelligence agency said in its latest report. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of Vietnam, measuring the average value growth in the 2012-2016 period, stood at 14.9 percent, while Indonesia's market jumped 19.6 percent, followed by 17.5 percent in Turkey and 15.1 percent in India, Mintel said in the report. Asian markets, where growth is being driven by a surge in innovative coffee products, make up the majority of the world’s fastest growing coffee markets, while European markets plus Australia are among the slowest, the report said. It did not give any market values. Even though Germany, the United States, Italy and Spain top the 2016 list of importers of Vietnamese green coffee beans based on Vietnam's government data, Mintel's findings suggest that European nations mostly process the bitter variety and re-export the finished products. Instant coffee dominates the retail market in Asia. Out of the new coffee products launched in 2016, 42 percent were soluble coffee granule products in Asia Pacific, while the figure was 20 percent in Europe and a mere 6 percent in North America. The global coffee market's retail volume grew 2.7 percent last year from 2015, slightly up from an annual rise of 2.5 percent the previous year, Mintel said. “The global coffee industry continues to experience healthy growth, driven by Asian markets in particular," said Jonny Forsyth, Global Drinks Analyst at Mintel. "Asia has far more growth potential as traditionally tea drinking consumers are converted slowly but surely into coffee drinkers." The International Coffee Organization estimated the CAGR of Vietnam's coffee consumption at 8 percent for the four-year period ending in 2015/2016, the second-fastest growth rate among the world's coffee exporting nations after the Philippines. The crop year lasts between October and September. The London-based ICO estimated Vietnam's coffee consumption at around 140,000 tons in the 2015/2016 season, or 8 percent of output, up slightly from 130,000 tons used domestically the previous season.

Nearly 90% of sidewalk-blocking beer bars in Hanoi backed by police: chairman
TUOI TRE NEWS UPDATED : 03/05/2017 11:33 GMT + 7 About 87 percent of sidewalk beer bars in Hanoi, whose operations often occupy the pavements, are covertly abetted by local police officers, hindering ongoing efforts to reclaim the public space, the city’s chairman Nguyen Duc Chung has asserted. Previous attempts to clear local promenades ended up in vain as local businesses kept repeating their illegal occupancy of the public areas, Chung said at a conference on Saturday morning. The ‘sidewalk reclamation’ campaign was initiated by the city’s Party Committee late 2014, but previous efforts did not prove effective as local police units have not imposed strict enforcement on those facilities that violated the law, according to the chairman. “I have conducted a probe and discovered that more than 150 out of 180 beer bars in Hanoi are abetted by local policemen,” he asserted. If the problem persists, the ‘sidewalk clearing’ effort will eventually fail, Chung underlined. He ordered local authorities to be responsible and serious in dealing with the encroachment of pavements. “I will name and shame those corrupted officers and officials in each ward and district if they are not serious in their job this time,” he continued. The law enforcement officers in charge must be assertive in their duty, the chairman said, adding that those who keep failing to enforce the law should be dismissed or transferred to another position. Chung also requested leaders of local authorities to set examples for citizens, and encourage their family members to comply with the regulation and respect sidewalk space. The city’s leader considered the lack of attention from competent authorities another reason for the ineffective attempts. Following specific steps According to the Hanoi chairman, local authorities must deal with the issue in a persistent manner. “Three specific steps must also be followed,” Chung stated. The first phase, he elaborated, involved propaganda and reminders for citizens not to let their business activities compromised the promenades. In the second stage, regular inspections should be carried out and warnings shall be issued for potential violations, he continued, adding that local businesses will be given a few days to re-organize their operations. After the designated period, officers will begin the final step with suitable punishments imposed on offenders. Chung tasked the municipal Department of Police with dispatching enforcement units to reclaim the footpaths at each neighborhood. Regarding the penalty, those businesses that violate the rule three times shall have their business license revoked and be banned from operating. The illegal occupancy of sidewalks must be stopped as it has negative effects on traffic safety, the urban aesthetics, and environmental hygiene, chairman Chung asserted.
