That is a good question on Taiwan and you are triggering my film studies brain.

First of all, do remember that Taiwan was under martial law till 1987. From 1988 till perhaps 2000, this should be the golden era of naughty HK Cat III films, flooding the market with all kinds of smut.

Due to legacy Confucian laws, before 2006, laws in Taiwan prohibit production and distribution of adult films under a broad sword, threatening jail terms and hefty fines.

In 2006, there was a constitutional reintepretation of these laws that separate such content under "hardcore" and "softcore".

Adult AV then became classified as "softcore" with artistic value, and that pushed the development of their industry as we know now with SWAG, Madou, etc.

All the content makers needed to do to protect themselves legally was to put a 18+ warning at the start of their video.

No, they didn't make Cat III style movies in Taiwan because by the time Taiwanese AV production became legal, times have changed and everything is internet based.

And yes, they picked up the slack and we are now jerking off mostly to their video content in Chinese.

Well said. In fact, China side is heavily cracking down on pornography stuff, hence understandably HK Cat III is no longer a thing. It is the Taiwanese that is going into this now.

Times change and who knows next time who it will shift to. Just enjoy the ride while it lasts. Frankly I think we live in an age where you want the old and new stuff, it's all easily available online. No longer the days of VHS, VCD, DVD or Yangtze, though they will always hold a special place in our hearts.

HK CAT III are sweet old memories. I recall watching these in video tapes which we called it "Blue Tapes"

The pool of actresses for Cat 3 vs AV will be a huge difference, at least 20 times if not more, which is where the quality will come in in terms of looks and more importantly figure.

Even the professionalism and experience of shooting will make a huge difference.

For me, I prefer to watch and even rewatch CAT 3 over AV, esp 麻豆, as CAT 3 is honestly more entertaining.
Also more aroused from CAT 3 vs TW AV.
