Operating hours limited, raids intensified due to Ramadhan

In the name of Ramadhan, city administrations across the country have started to impose restrictions on operating hours of entertainment centers and food and beverage businesses to protect the sanctity of the fasting month.

Gorontalo city administration has announced its latest ruling on nightclub operational hours during Ramadhan. According to the regulation, pubs and karaoke spots should remain completely closed.

“Restaurants are allowed to open from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m.,” said acting Gorontalo Deputy Mayor Weni Liputo on Wednesday. Any violations, she said, would be met with firm punishments.

“If they violate the regulation, we will warn them first. But if they continue doing it, we will close their business and possibly withdraw their permits,” she continued, adding that the administration would also keep an eye on beauty salons that reportedly also operated as sex salons.

The Surakarta administration in Central Java has also announced a similar regulation. All nightclubs, bars, karaoke outlets and coffee shops must remain closed for the first and last week of Ramadhan. They are only allowed to open during the second and third week of Ramadhan with restricted hours.

According to Bambang Marsudi Budi Santoso of Surakarta’s public order division, discotheques and pubs were allowed to operate from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. while bars were allowed to open from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Karaoke spots and coffee shops could operate from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. during the two middle weeks. Bambang also called on the owners of entertainment centers not to display liquor during Ramadhan.

Surakarta Culture and Tourism Agency head Widdy Srihanto added that the regulation did not apply to restaurants. However, he went on, restaurants were expected to hang temporary curtains to block activities inside from being seen during the day.

In Yogyakarta, owners of entertainment centers along Parangtritis Beach in Bantul regency said they would voluntarily close down their businesses during the first and last weeks of Ramadhan out of respect for the holy month.

For the two middle weeks, they would open from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., according to Rohadi, head of the Karaoke Owners Association at Parangtritis Beach.

Meanwhile, the Bantul administration has pledged to intensify raids during the fasting month. Bantul’s Public Order Agency head, Kandiawan, called on locals to report any disturbances caused by activities at entertainment centers.

Over the many years. They hv already make use of the Loop hole in the law to operate during this period. Many Pub/Cafe are actually holding Resturant License. Thought they cannot serve alcohol till 8pm. Many still serve u in Teapot and cup from as early as 2 pm. Just need to know where.

Ever wonder why suddenly Alexiz, Maliboro, Sun City. Travel etc are called hotel. because the law allow the pijit to continue operating in the holy month as they are hotel for tourist....

Was at Jalan Labu at 7 plus for dinner last night (1st Day of Fasting).

Finish walk across the street to buy cigarette, stall lady asked me to sit and wait a while. 3 SYT and 4 young boy were with them sitting on the table next to me. One of the lady was staring at me, she looks like 20 n not bad, plain looking, my preference.... She kept Staring and smiling to me and I was thinking... hmmm.... Then she starts to complaint to the guys.... Asking how u gonna find customers for us.... oh... So they are.....

Anyway, got my cigarette and left smiling back at that lady. Would hv offer to bring her back but been the first day of fasting. Better be safe then sorry....

Ramadan Raids Begin in Jakarta

The Jakarta administration said it would begin raiding night clubs and some other establishments on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, as the majority of Indonesian Muslims prepared for Ramadan.

Kukuh Hadi Santoso, the chief of Jakarta’s Public Order office — Satpol PP — said 225 officers, including some police and military personnel, would be spread across the city to make sure that night clubs, bars and other entertainment establishments obeyed a circular issued by the local tourism and culture agency.

The edict requires around half of them to close for the entire month, while others are to be subject to reduced opening hours.

“Officers will sweep all entertainment establishments in Jakarta… and take action against those violating the rules,” Kukuh said on Tuesday. “Sanctions given to violators will range from administrative penalties and written warnings to them being shut down and having their operating license revoked.”

Kukuh said the raids would be conducted from around 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

A total of 1,799 establishments are subject to the edict, Kukuh said. Nearly 900 of them are compelled to completely close for the entire Islamic holy month, estimated to end on Aug. 7, while the rest may open only from 8:30 p.m. through 1:30 a.m.

Among the first category are night clubs, discotheques, massage parlors and bars, with the exemption being bars that are part of hotel services. The second category includes karaoke houses, billiard halls and live-music venues.

All establishments will have to close, however, on the day before Ramadan, the first day of Ramadan, the 16th day, during the two days of Idul Fitri, which marks the end of the fasting month, and the day after the holiday.

“I’m sure mass organizations, the public and entertainment businesses understand and respect this [policy],” he said. “Members of the public or mass organizations can report violations to Satpol PP or Jakarta’s Tourism and Culture Agency.”
