Players dash across road to catch 'rare Pokemon'
Published 6 hours ago Muneerah Ab Razak A strange flock descended on Hougang Avenue 10 on Wednesday, led by their smartphones and oblivious to traffic. After spotting a rare and powerful Pokemon called Snorlax at Punggol Park, a crowd of Pokemon Go players made a dash from the amphitheatre near Block 401 in Hougang to the park. A video on Facebook shows dozens eagerly running across the road without apparent care for oncoming traffic. Mr Kiat Long, 24, a tertiary student who declined to give his surname, saw the scene. He said: "It was dangerous how people dashed across the road without checking. Cars and buses had to stop to wait for them to cross." Since the popular augmented-reality game, in which players catch virtual creatures called Pokemon, was launched in Singapore last Saturday, hundreds of players have gathered at the amphitheatre, which is host to four PokeStops - where you pick up items to catch Pokemon and lures attracting Pokemon. Pokemon Go is also reportedly drawing crowds to public spaces such as the Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park and the Toa Payoh Town Park. Mr Kenny Lee, 25, was in Hougang yesterday to experience the "Poke-spirit" and to also find the Snorlax. "It's for the fun of it. Singapore is safe enough that running across the road won't kill you." continue reading here : http://www.straitstimes.com/singapor...h-rare-pokemon

Prison officer who molested male inmate over three-month period jailed for 27 months
Published Aug 12, 2016, 5:56 pm SGT Amir Hussain SINGAPORE - A sergeant with the Singapore Prison Service, who molested a male inmate in Admiralty West jail, grabbing his buttocks and even groping his private parts, was on Friday (Aug 12) put behind bars for more than two years. In sentencing Mohamed Faris Osman to 27 months' jail, District Judge May Mesenas said the prison officer had failed to live up to his organisation's core values. "Captains of Lives is the oft seen tagline which the Singapore Prisons Service prides itself on, for which prison officers aspire to make a difference in the lives of inmates and where they are fair yet firm in the treatment of inmates, and carry themselves as role models ..." However, Faris, who had worked for the prison authorities for 27 years, abused his position to commit the crimes. "On the contrary, his numerous acts of molest on an inmate, ironically and regrettably, destroyed the life of the very inmate he was meant to help rehabilitate." The judge also said a stiff sentence is needed "to reflect the court's abhorrence for such acts of molest committed by (Faris) on a vulnerable class of persons like the victim". continue reading here : http://www.straitstimes.com/singapor...-jailed-for-27
