Rising stars: Vietnam’s Da Lat, Sa Pa named among best new destinations for 2017

By VnExpress December 9, 2016 | 10:56 am GMT+7

The highland towns are loved by the TripAdvisor community for their cool weather, unique green scenes and ethnic culture.
Still don’t know where your next vacation should be?

Vietnam’s charming towns Da Lat and Sa Pa have entered a new list of the top 10 rising destinations in Asia by popular travel booking site TripAdvisor, which said the places should be best vacation choices for 2017.

The Travelers’ Choice awards for Destinations on the Rise, released on Wednesday, recognized 43 destinations around the world selected based on travelers’ review ratings for accommodations, restaurants and attractions, and increase in booking interest.

Da Lat, situated 1,500 meters above sea level in the Central Highlands, came at number four in the top 10 list of rising destinations in Asia and Sa Pa in the northern highlands at number six.

Given various nicknames such as the city of eternal spring, the city of flowers and the city of love, Da Lat is recommended for providing a cool respite from Vietnam’s year-round hot weather. The former colonial resort town is full of beautiful French-era buildings and surrounded by pine trees, flowers and vegetables farms.

Tourists are recommended to visit Linh Phuoc Pagoda, an intricate structure built in 1950 with ceilings, walls and installations made from millions of pieces of broken glass, terracotta and beer bottles, Truc Lam Zen Buddhist temple, and the roaring Elephant Falls, where they can take adventures with rafting, mountain biking and canyoning.

In January, the New York Times also recommended Da Lat among 52 places to go in 2016, describing it as “an agricultural El Dorado” with unique scenes of pine forests, locally grown avocados, and artichoke tea.

Around 2,000 kilometers to the north is Sa Pa, known for its trekking trails. The colorful town is recognized as a perfect oasis for travelers in strenuous mountain trek or rice paddy tour. Tourists can visit the Saturday night “love market,” the Gothic stone church at the town center which is the reminder of the French missionary influence, and many downtown Vietnamese and European restaurants.

Favorite places among tourists are Muong Hoa Valley, which offers spectacular views of cascading rice terraces, peaks and forests, the Indochina’s peak Fansipan, and local terraced rice fields, which have been considered one of the most magnificent scenes on earth.

Visitors can also learn about interesting culture by traveling through hill tribe villages.

Other favorite destinations in Asia are in Malaysia, which have three entries, Azerbaijan, India, Philippines, South Korea and Taiwan.

“These destinations are fast gaining interest and popularity amongst our community of travelers all over the world,” Janice Lee Fang, communications director for TripAdvisor, Asia Pacific, said as cited by the Pacific Asia Travel Association.

“We hope these winning lists will inspire those planning trips in 2017 to consider booking their holidays with some of these rising destinations, be it Baku, Da Lat or Kuching.”

Foreign tourists to Vietnam hit a record high of nine million in the first 11 months this year, up 25.4 percent from a year ago.

HCMC plans $652-million elevated road to ease traffic congestion

By VnExpress December 8, 2016 | 09:50 pm GMT+7

It will serve as the backbone for a series of highways in the sky.
Ho Chi Minh City’s municipal government is seeking permission from the central government to build an elevated road to help reduce traffic congestion.

Road Number 1 will run for 9.5km with total investment of about VND15 trillion ($652 million), local media reported on Thursday.

The four-lane road is expected to begin at Lang Cha Ca Roundabout in Tan Binh District near Tan Son Nhat International Airport and end at Phu An Bridge in Binh Thanh District.

It will serve as the backbone for a future elevated road system.

It will also act as a link from the downtown to belt roads around the city, alleviating the rising transport pressure on the country’s economic hub.

Ho Chi Minh City also has plans to build four other elevated roads with a combined length of more than 70km.

Construction of the city's first metro line linking Ben Thanh Market and Suoi Tien Theme Park started in December 2013 in District 9.

Plans for more metro lines are underway.

Market boom spurs Vietnamese airline carriers to expand fleets at speed

By VnExpress December 7, 2016 | 02:38 pm GMT+7

But the country's airports do not have the capacity to cope with soaring passenger numbers.
Vietnam’s aviation market is growing at the third-fastest pace in the Asia-Pacific region, but the country is grappling with an acute dearth of airport capacity.

It is estimated that the number of passengers in 2016 will jump by 29 percent from a year ago to about 52.2 million, according to the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam.

Aviation authorities also estimate that the number of passengers on domestic flights will soar 35 percent to 28 million this year from 20.7 million last year, accounting for more than half of the total.

Low-cost carriers have become the key driver for Vietnam’s fast-growing airline market, transporting 55 percent of domestic passengers in 2016.

Budget airlines are rapidly increasing their market shares with an annual growth rate of 15-20 percent, said aviation authorities. VietJet Air, the dominant player in the low-cost market, has quickly captured a 40 percent share of Vietnam’s local market, and will likely surpass state-owned Vietnam Airlines in the next few years as Vietnam’s largest domestic carrier.

To meet the local market demand, airline carriers have maintained a rapid rate expansion over the past five years, raising the total number of aircraft by 50 percent to 141 by the end of the third quarter of 2016.

National flagship carrier Vietnam Airlines, low cost carriers Jetstar Pacific and VietJet Air and newly-founded Vietstar are all planning to expand their fleets to a combined 263 aircraft in the next four years.

The ambitious expansion plan reflects a targeted annual capacity of 102 million passengers by 2020; around double the current capacity.

However, given that the country’s two major airports are overloaded, airlines might have to put the brakes on their expansion plans.

For instance, Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh is expected to handle 31 million passengers this year, far beyond its maximum capacity of 25 million.

Meanwhile, the construction of Long Thanh Airport about 40 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City, which will take up the overflow from Tan Son Nhat, may not be completed before 2025. By then aviation officials say Tan Son Nhat is forecast to receive a whopping 50 million passengers a year.

The situation is likely to worsen in the next four year as domestic carriers plan to expand their fleets to capitalize on the market potential, Lai Xuan Thanh, the director of the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam, told the government’s online news portal.

Aviation authorities are considering putting a cap on the number of new planes local airliners can buy in the next four years due to the serious lack of airport capacity.

Under the development blueprint for Vietnam’s airline market over the next four years, market regulators have put forward a plan under which the four domestic airlines will be allowed to add no more than 89 aircraft to the total 141 they currently operate.

Ho Chi Minh City dentist drops burr down patient’s throat

TUOI TRE NEWS
UPDATED : 12/09/2016 09:46 GMT + 7

A woman from Ho Chi Minh City had to receive emergency treatment after a dentist dropped a dental tool down her throat on Thursday.

Doctors at the An Binh Hospital, located in District 5, on Thursday removed a three centimeter long pointed dental drill bit, from D.T.M.H., a 56-year-old resident in the southern Vietnamese city.

The procedure was performed by Dr. Nguyen Huu Tieng, who said H. had gone to a major dental center in District 5 at11:00 am that day to have her teeth fixed.

During the operation, H.’s dentist accidentally dropped a dental burr, a drill bit used to cut or shave teeth, down the patient’s throat.

The dental surgeon later advised H. against hospital admission, saying that the object would eventually be expelled from her body via her gastrointestinal tract.

After returning home, H. began to experience pain in her chest and later in her stomach before going to the An Binh Hospital for emergency help.

The initial diagnosis confirmed that the burr was stuck in her stomach, causing scratches and bleeding in the antrum.

Doctors at the infirmary chose to extract the object using an endoscopic technique.

H.’s pain subsided shortly after the procedure and she was able to be discharged from the hospital.

50 Vietnamese car driving trainers found using fake high school diplomas

TUOI TRE NEWS
UPDATED : 12/08/2016 20:03 GMT + 7

Fifty car driving trainers in a Central Highlands province have had their licenses taken away by transport officials after they were discovered using counterfeit high school diplomas.

Do Binh Chinh, deputy director of the Department of Transport in Dak Lak Province, has signed a decision to withdraw the licenses of these trainers.

The department said in the decision that the 50 car driving trainers had used fake high school diplomas in the paperwork to apply for their licenses.

Police had informed the transport department of this scandal after an investigation.

Using fake diplomas is a blatant violation of the law, police officers said in a document sent to the department, adding that the agency should take strict measures to deal properly with the scandal.

A list of the 50 trainers provided by police shows eight working for Binh Minh Vocational Center, six for Tay Nguyen Occupational School, eight for the Thanh Luan vocational center, ten for VINASME Tay Nguyen Vocational School, and 18 for Viet My Vocational School, all in Dak Lak.

In Vietnam, street artists told to quit impromptu gigs for planned events

TUOI TRE NEWS
UPDATED : 12/08/2016 16:17 GMT + 7

While spontaneity is the spirit of street art, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City authorities are demanding that they be briefed in advance on any performances that take place on local walking streets.

The decision, which the regulatory bodies say is to ensure security and order at the pedestrian venues, has caused uproar among local street artists and stripped the walking streets of a core attraction.

The Nguyen Hue walking street in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City and its counterpart in Hanoi near the iconic Ho Guom (Sword Lake) are hot spots for locals and tourists to spend evenings, particularly to take in the groups of street artists and performers who flock to each arena to showcase their skills.

Most of the gigs are unplanned, with spectators gathering around the performances with excitement.

However, the Hanoi culture department has recently enacted decree No.79, stipulating that it be notified of the content and time of street artists planning to perform in the capital at least five days in advance.

Vietnam arrests former CEO, four other ex-executives of Dong A Bank

REUTERS/TUOI TRE NEWS
UPDATED : 12/11/2016 09:57 GMT + 7

Vietnam's police have arrested the former chief executive officer and four other ex-staff of a troubled partly private bank which has been under central bank surveillance since August last year, the bank said on Saturday.

Former CEO Tran Phuong Binh and four staff of the Ho Chi Minh City-based Dong A Bank, who have been suspended since August 2015, were taken into custody as the police were investigating the lender over its banking and monetary operations, the unlisted bank said in a statement.

The State Bank of Vietnam, the country's central bank, placed Dong A Bank, under special supervision on Aug. 13, 2015 "for violations in financial management and credit grants" by some executives, the statement said.

Vietnam's fragmented banking sector has undergone major reform in the past few years, with stricter lending and debt classification, forced takeovers, numerous fraud investigations and the formation of a state-run asset management company to support commercial lenders.

Bad debts have been cut to 2.62 percent of the sector's total outstanding loans in September, from 2.93 percent in September 2015, based on central bank data.

Dong A Bank, 6.87 percent owned by the Communist Party chapter in Ho Chi Minh City as of late 2013, said it recorded positive lending growth since this August, while the ratios of its reserves for ensuring liquidity and repayments have now been above the central bank's requirements.

The bank statement reaffirmed "all its business activities have been normal, clients' benefits are ensured."

On Friday Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said the government was seeking to step up dealing with banks' bad debts and that the Asian Development Bank and a Vietnamese private partner were planning to buy one of the country's weak banks.

He did not name the bank in question.

Earlier this month, Moody's said its "outlook for Vietnam's banking system over the next 12-18 months was stable, as it has been since December 2014."

Vietnam's macroeconomic stability and resilient economic growth will continue to support the banks' weak credit profiles, "while capital buffers will continue to deteriorate because of high loan growth," Moody's said.

The central bank estimated loans to grow 18 percent this year from 2015, accelerating from an annual expansion of 17.26 percent last year.

Inguinal hernia surgery reveals Vietnam man has uterus, ovaries

TUOI TRE NEWS
UPDATED : 12/10/2016 16:09 GMT + 7

A man in southern Vietnam has lived 26 years without knowing he has a uterus and a pair of ovaries.

T.T.P., a resident of Tien Giang Province, has been married for four years but has yet to have children, despite a normal sexual life with his wife.

After an infertility test, P. was diagnosed as having no sperm in the semen and suffering from inguinal hernia.

The man thus went to the Military Hospital 120 for the inguinal hernia treatment, and was asked to undergo a surgery.

“However, during the operation, our surgeons found a huge tumor that looks just like a uterus with ovaries in both sides,” doctor Vu Dang Trung, the hospital deputy director, said on Friday.

Doctors then went on to remove the tumor for the patient.
“The tumor weighs 300g and appears to be a real uterus and a pair of ovaries,” doctor Trung said.

The patient recovers well after the successful operation, the doctor added.
Trung underlined this is a rare case in both local and international literature.

“Earlier there is one similar in India, but that man leads a normal sex life with his wife and has two children,” Trung said.
