Give PA staff space to move on, PA chief Yam Ah Mee urges

SINGAPORE - The People's Association (PA) chief executive director Yam Ah Mee in his first comments about his former staff Laura Ong, noted that she was a "good committed staff".

Ms Ong who was believed to be in an intimate relationship with former MP Michael Palmer has since tendered her resignation as constituency director of Pasir Ris West constituency office.

Mr Yam added that he felt "so sorry for her" and Ms Ong's fellow colleagues were also affected as they lost a "very good" co-worker ( also a "very good bedfellow" )

He urged the public to give the PA's staff space for them to move forward and address their issues.

Mr Yam noted that other PA staff has been briefed to continue with the work of serving residents.

Reiterating reasons behind PA's decision to disclose Ms Ong's identity, he said that staff were asking and there was public interest in this matter.

you don't have to be a mp to be speaker. This was highlighted in a recent article. Pap can find an outsider if they want. I think in the past, they chose their own mp because the speaker's pay also quite high. Might as well let own people earn.

I don't think palmer's wife is pretty. If you want to talk politics and Lao chio, I will think of Lily Neo. She is quite pretty for her age. Daughter also got 30 years old but not pretty like mummy. 　　总理提到，他注意到有民众表示希望尽早在榜鹅东举行补选，目前他还在慎重考虑这个问题。

　　本报昨天报道的最新形势显示，上次参选只得4.45%选票而失去按柜金的民主联盟秘书长林睦荃、革新党 秘书长肯尼斯以及人民党前第二助理秘书长方月光都已表明有意参与榜鹅东补选，加上意在捍卫该区议席的行动党 ，以及在去年大选中竞逐该区并已率先表明参选意愿的工人党，意味榜鹅东可能出现热闹的五角战局 面。

　　针对榜鹅东或将出现多方抢滩的格局，总理回应时说：“听见楼梯响，现在等人下来。会不会补选，我还没有决定，时间我也还没有决定，决定后会马上宣布。补选的话，谁要来角逐，选民要怎么选择，这是选民的决定。从行动党的角度来看，我们当然会有 备而来。"

PM Lee still mulling over by-election.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong continued to keep his cards close to his chest on whether there will be a by-election in Punggol East.

Speaking to Singapore reporters in New Delhi, he acknowledged that there were expectations for one to be held in the seat, but said he had not decided whether to hold one and if so, when it would take place.

He noted that whenever a vacancy came up and there was "no special reason" not to have a by-election, there would be expectations for one. We will consider this, he said.

The Punggol East seat was vacated last week after People's Action Party MP Michael Palmer, who was also Speaker of Parliament, resigned over an extramarital affair.

In the wake of his exit, Mr Lee had issued a statement saying he would "carefully consider whether to call a by-election in Punggol East and, if so, when."

He added then that there were several items on the national agenda, including the Singapore Conversation, the White Paper on Population and the 2013 budget - fuelling speculation that the earliest a by-election could be held would be in the second quarter of next year.

By-elections have been held in 31 constituencies since self-governance in 1959. Of these, the PAP lost three times: Hong Lim in 1961 and Anson in 1961 and 1981.

From 1959 to Independence in 1965, by-elections were nail-biting fights which saw the People's Action Party (PAP) tussle with other parties to hang on to its dominance in Parliament.

In April 1961, former national development minister Ong Eng Guan ran as an independent in Hong Lim after being expelled from the PAP. He won handsomely against the PAP's Jek Yeun Thong. Three months later, the Workers' Party's (WP) David Marshall won Anson in a by-election following the death of a PAP assemblyman.

Missing the hougang by election in 2012. PAP lost that too. Funny how a by-election is optional after his PAP MP shot himself in the foot by having an affair. The residents are being innocently penalized when their MP had to resign over his affair.
