My Reservist Stint In Kanchanaburi Saiyok Camp

This adventures story happened in the 80s. During my time we have to complete 13 cycles of in camp training consisting of 7 high keys & 6 low keys. It was during 1 of these high keys that we went overseas to this camp. All of us were excited , not because of going overseas but because we were told that we will be given 2 days of R & R .....hehee

Before I go any further, a short intro about me & my company . We are from the combat engineers going there to support " Exercise Crescendo ". Me myself is a platoon medical orderly but people always called us medic. Aside from the usual exercise program, the rest of the time were spent in the camp as we were not allowed to book out. Luckily there was a canteen where one could get Thai food , beers , cigarettes & even jackpot machines. Unfortunately it was also during 1 of my night time solo trip to the canteen that something strange happened. There are 2 routes to the canteen. A longer & brightly lit one and a shorter & dimly lit one. Being a lazy person , I of course will naturally took the shorter one. One night my platoon kakis were too busy playing cards in the barracks so no choice have to go alone to the canteen to have a drink and played some jackpot. While walking along the dimly lit path, suddenly I heard something. " mang mang kia "......" mang mang kia " ........ it seem like a teochew lady voice. Because it was eerily quiet that night and suddenly a voice break out liddat , I shivered a little and quickly looked around. To my horror, there was no one around !!!!

......soon I started getting goosebumps and decided to get the hell out of there quickly. Upon reaching the canteen, order 2 bottles of beer and lighted up a cigarette to calm down. That night I went back to my barrack ( using the longer route of course ) and narrate the incident to my platoon mates. As usual, some believe some dun. Got 1 joker even said that he heard there is a kind of insect in the camp that make this kind of sound at night After that night incident, I stopped using that shorter route and nothing further happened throughout my stay there.

During 1 of our bridging outside the camp, another unusual incident happened. We having our lunch at that time when suddenly I heard " medic !!! medic !!! " It was my PC calling me and I noticed beside him was the thai sergent who was assisting us in our exercise. Both of them were waving me and it seem urgent. I grabbed my medical pouch and ran towards them. It turned out my help was needed to attend to a injured villager nearby. So me and the thai sergent hopped into his jeep and sped away.......post this part first scared wait anything happened again.....to be continue......

Upon reaching the place, I realized it was actually a poorly built little bamboo hut. I followed the Thai sergent into the hut and was surprised to see a young girl ( about 18 or 19 years old ba ) sitting on a thin mattress on the floor. 2 of her toes were cut and blood were flowing out slowly. As I could hardly spoke a word of thai at that time, luckily the thai sergent was there to assist. After cleaning & dressing up the cuts , I advised the father to bring his daughter to the camp medical center to change the dressing. While sipping the cup of water which the father offered, there was some exchange of thai words amongst them. All three of them were sort of looking at me while conversing and I noticed the girl look a bit shy at that time. I then asked the thai sergent what they are talking about ???....izzit about me ??? The thai sergent then said the girl father would like to marry off his daughter to me !!!!! As he was laughing when he was saying this, I thought it was just a joke , laughed together with them and politely turned down the offer. Haiz.....how I wish I could understand thai language at that time ......to be continue..........

Thank you thank you bro .......... wonder whether that camp is still around now ..... during active time I also went to Brunei for 6 months !!! .... will post part 2 of my R & R adventures after I finished work tonight .....hehee......
