SINGAPORE: Preliminary findings from the Los Angeles County Coroner suggest that the death of a student from Singapore in the US was the result of alcohol poisoning.
The student from University of Southern California was found dead over the weekend, days after a party.
Channel NewsAsia checked if there are precautions in place at local institutions.
The National University of Singapore (NUS) bans alcohol on its campus.
Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Singapore Management University (SMU) have food and beverage outlets on campus that serve alcohol, but there is an alcohol ban in NTU halls.
Dr Joshua Kua, a specialist in psychiatry & consultancy at Raffles Counselling Centre, said: “Young people will obviously think of drinking alcohol as being cool and as a sign of maturity and as an adult.
“But a lot of people do not realise the danger of binge drinking, they thought that if they do not drink alcohol every day, then they are not alcoholics.
“And it doesn't (do) harm having more (to) drink over the week and at a party, for example. But we know from research that binge drinking is harmful both physically and physiologically." - CNA/nd
