CHC INVESTMENT MANAGER: KONG HEE’S STORY IS “ALL COOKED UP”

Post date:

The long-running trial into the 6 leaders of City Harvest Church resumed today with Mr Chew Eng Han, the former Investment Manager of the church taking the stand.
Chew is one of the 6 accused church leaders who are accused of misappropriating millions of dollars from the church’s funds to put into the music career of Kong Hee’s wife, Sun Ho through sham bonds.
Chew is representing himself and he is the 4th person to give evidence in the case.
Chew explained in court today that he broke away from the church in 2013 as he believed that his co-accused were simply choosing the “most convenient way” of defending themselves.
The other five co-accused had turned against Chew saying that they didn’t know about the various legal implications behind the sham bonds and they said that Chew was the one who was the brains behind the bonds.
Chew explained that the story told by Kong Hee and the rest was “being cooked up” and it was not the truth. He said that he broke away from the group as they were just taking the most convenient way and blaming everything on him.

Chew claims that the investments that the church made into Firna and Xtron were genuine and were not ‘sham bonds’ used just to recycle the money.
He also shared that Kong Hee and Deputy Senior Pastor Tan Ye Peng, both of whom are also part of the 6 accused, did not take any leadership and failed to properly explain the proceeds of the bonds when asked about them by the church’s lawyer.
“When the fire broke out, I didn't see any leadership, I didn't see any shepherds. All I saw was fear," Chew said.
Chew also contradicted some of the claims made by Kong Hee earlier saying that Kong and Tan had full control over Xtron.
However, he also said that there wasn’t actually anything wrong with this as the Crossover Project was a legitimate church project and so it was justified that church funds went into it. He also said that it was quite common in the financial world for two organisations to be controlled by the same people.
The Crossover project is the name of the scheme where the church funds were used to bankroll Sun Ho’s music career as it was a “way for the church to reach out to non-Christian audiences”.
