Thumbs up Angmo Charbo to help NSmen prepare for IPPT

An honorable member of the Coffee Shop Has Just Posted the Following:

NSmen, prepare for IPPT - with sport scientists' help

National servicemen from the police and Singapore Civil Defence Force will soon be offered the expertise of sport scientists to get in shape for their annual fitness test.

Fitness diagnostic tests, which are currently available only to athletes, will be extended to these servicemen from Aug 1 to gauge their fitness levels so they can better tailor their training for their Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT).

These diagnostic tests, which will cost between $100 and $150 a session, include heart and respiratory rate measurements and identification of any musculoskeletal deficiencies.

After the tests, servicemen can then sign up for a 10-week fitness training programme, which will cost $400 for 20 sessions.

HomeTeamNS has partnered Home United Football Club to run the tests and the "Train and Pass programme" that was piloted last July.

Servicemen must be part of the association for the NSmen from the Home Team (HomeTeamNS) to take part.

HomeTeamNS is aiming to get 3,000 NSmen to sign up, which they will be able to do at its clubhouses in Bukit Batok, Balestier and Sembawang.

Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Second Minister for Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs, said the facilities and expertise can help to "diagnose the problems that the common man may have" and allow the NSmen to exercise in a more effective way.

"Much of (the difficulty is that) they don't know how to achieve that level of fitness or the way they exercise will never get them to improve," said Mr Masagos, who is also the president of HomeTeamNS and patron of Home United FC.

"Therefore, coming to the sport science specialists will get them to achieve that goal they want."

Mr Dirk Schauenberg, who heads Home United FC's Sports Performance team, said: "Besides finding out your weak areas, you need to know how best to exploit your strengths to exercise properly."

NSman Nelson Chua, who was not able to jog prior to joining the pilot scheme last month, said he can now run on the treadmill for about 20 minutes.

The 26-year-old, who completed his full-time NS stint in 2011, said: "I feel a lot more motivated when I have the trainers to guide me and teach me the proper way to exercise."
