SCDF joins in Nikon photo contest fiasco with subtle parody

SINGAPORE - Singapore Civil Defence Force's (SCDF) wicked humour strikes again online - this time, in a clever attempt to parody the badly photoshopped winner of the Nikon photo contest, while still highlighting the training their officers.

The photo posted on the SCDF Facebook page on Feb 1 is part of a series showing SCDF's training regime and exercises. It cheekily showed an officer climbing up a ladder similar to the one featured in the entry by Chay Yu Wei.

Accompanying the photo was the caption: "[LIVE] Officers perform a height exercise to assess their ability to operate under physically demanding conditions."

Their followers immediately noticed the similarity and gave their stamps of approval with likes on that post.

Chay's Nikon photo entry showed a plane flying overhead and framed by the ladder. He submitted the photo and won a trolley bag.

But it was soon found to be digitally manipulated and Chay subsequently apologised.

It is not the first time that the SCDF have used playful words and imagery online.

On Jan 6, netizens poked fun of a now-deleted photo showing a glum recruit on the Basic Military Training Centre (BMTC) Facebook page.

SCDF followed up with a post of a cheerful-looking recruit and his parents with the caption: "In SCDF, our recruits look forward to being part of the Life Saving Force. Here's to a fulfilling National Service!"

Some pointed out that their hashtags #‎wearbluenotfeelblue‬ which accompanied the photo seemed like a dig at BMTC. This led SCDF to post up an apology on Jan 7 saying that the photo was not meant to criticise or mean any disrespect.

In Feb 2014, SCDF also rang up a hilarious exchange with SGAG on Twitter after they started to "follow" them.

After being notified, SGAG tweeted: "The @SCDF just followed SGAG on Twitter. Well, umm, thank you? I'll call u when my cat gets stuck on the tree?"

The cheeky exchange was later compiled and put up on SCDF's Facebook page.

One of the fans of the exchange was Minister Tan Chuan-Jin, who could not resist sharing the photo on his Facebook page with the captions "LOL" (Laugh out loud).
