45 fake gold bars seized, six men arrested

SINGAPORE — Forty-five fake gold bars were seized and six men were arrested for trying to sell the counterfeit items, said the Singapore Police in a press release on Saturday (April 8). 


The suspects, aged between 17 and 24, were arrested after simultaneous operations were carried out on Thursday and Friday in Yishun, Joo Koon Road, Kampong Java Road and Outram Road.


A total of 45 fake gold bars were recovered during the course of the operation. 
Three of the suspects — aged 17, 19 and 24 — will be charged in Court on Saturday for conspiracy to cheat under Section 420 read with Section 109 of the Penal Code.
Investigations against the remaining suspects are still ongoing.


The police said they received reports of attempts to sell the fake gold bars between March 13 and April 5, with preliminary investigations revealing that the suspects had tried to peddle the counterfeit items to several pawnshops and members of the public.


Two men, which TODAY understands to be Singaporeans, were arrested earlier on Wednesday in relation to the same case for their botched attempts to offload two fake gold bars at a pawnshop near Tekka Market.


The Police would like to remind members of the public to be cautious and not to buy gold bars from unreliable sources.


Anyone found guilty of cheating may be jailed for up to 10 years, and may face a fine.
