Accountant on holiday in Singapore fined $2,700 for theft

SINGAPORE - An accountant who was here on a holiday with her family has been fined $2,700 for stealing from various shops at Sentosa and VivoCity over six days in May.

Indian national Nidhhi Agarwal, 36, who stole property totalling $583, pleaded guilty on Thursday (July 6) to three counts of theft.

She stole 10 items worth $180 at Minion Mart at Universal Studios Singapore, Sentosa Gateway, on May 3; a $45 Jurassic World Lego set at its Sentosa Gateway Festive Hotel outlet on May 4; and seven items worth $145 from Uniqlo at VivoCity at HarbourFront walk on May 6.

Five other theft charges committed at Candylicious, Transformers, Universal Studios Singapore, Toys "R" Us and Desigual were considered during her sentencing.

Assistant Superintendent Kevin Lee Ming Woei, in prosecuting, said Agarwal was on a week-long visit to Singapore with her husband and two young children when she stole $180 worth of mostly Despicable Me items from the shelves at Minion Mart at USS on May 3. She kept them inside plastic bags which contained some souvenirs she had bought earlier at the store.

The next day, she was waiting to pay for some toys at Lego when she picked up a Jurassic World Lego toy box and placed it inside a pram.

She left after paying for some items she had left on the cashier counter.

The store manager discovered the loss on May 6 and called the police.

Agarwal was at Uniqlo at VivoCity on May 6 to exchange a jacket bought the previous day when she stole six T-shirts and a hoodie.

Her identity was established through the CCTV footage from the Lego store. She was arrested at the Changi Airport departure hall when she was about to leave.

All the stolen items were recovered.

She could have been jailed for up to three years and/or fined for each charge of theft.
