Hi all, sorry sorry sorry... Was on business yesterday, didn't have time to write. Here's update.

Part 35- my sure-prise

“Hey young man! Right on time I see!” I close the door and Mr Wong went back to his seat after putting down his putter. Now, I took a seat opposite him. I kept quiet and anticipated what was next in his agenda. Mr Wong put up his serious face now and took out a file. It was those yellow cardboard type file and I managed to look at the employee number. Mine! Now, I started to worry because I am afraid that was a surprise review. I didn’t know if I was ready for any questions from him.

Mr Wong broke silence, “How long have you been working here?” I staggered for an answer, “4 years, sir.” He looked at me, “In this 4 years, what have you learnt?” Now, this was really breathtaking as I had to come out with every experience, projects and education given by the company. This went on for a while until, “Do you like working here?” What kind of question is that? It would look like he was actually digging into my file. I can’t complain especially, when he takes care of the entire HR division. It was almost a one sided conversation but anyhow, I had to endure it.

“As you should know, the company is expanding and will definitely need a lot of talents. Also, the company will not tolerate failures. I have reviewed your file and find you not suitable for an assistant manager.” Now, what have I done to him? This sentence nearly made me go over to the desk and kill him. Anyway, I had to be professional and don’t let it go to my head. Mr. Wong continued, “Why don’t you see for yourself.” He slipped an envelope to me and asked me to open it. Could it be a termination letter? My hands were shaking when I opened the letter. I opened the letter slowly and started to read the first paragraph. My eyes brightened up at the second sentence.

“… thus, the company has seen fit to promote you to a manager in charge of Human Resources.”

I breathed a sense of relief when I saw that line. I think I had more to celebrate. Mr. Wong stood up and extended his hand. “Congratulations Lim, I have been following up on your progress ever since you’ve been here. I can say you’re a people person and are wasted in purchasing.” I can only smile and give my thanks to him. I am to move to my new ‘office’ on Monday. I left the room happy and just before closing the door; I caught a glimpse of Mr. Wong grabbing his putter again.

It would seem that I am to replace Eric who has gone to Bangkok. I just cannot wait till tonight and tell Alex about it. But I had other things in my mind that I want to do first. I gave Alex a call and confirmed the appointment tonight. I’ve already asked uncle Maniam to be our chauffeur tonight.

I can say that this is the first time that I can see such original story lines in this forum and really makes me looking forward to your every updates whenever I login.

Part 36- Money well spent.

I was walking with Alex down Orchard Road. Uncle Maniam has just dropped both of here and went home. It looks like tonight is the night of nights. I passed a clock and still it was about 1930hrs. I think I can still have time to have some fun first. Anyway, Alex dragged me into a shop as soon as she saw a nice couple t-shirt. About 20 minutes of trying, finally we were in jeans and t-shirt; both were white and have synchronous patterns. I should describe the feeling; it was just like being in JC once more, being with my first love and this relationship was just going to grow out of puppy love.

We didn’t talk about work or anything else while we were together. I was too exited that day that I’ve nearly forgot that I just got promoted. We decided to head to a hotel down the road for dinner. I think the setting there should be nice enough. We went in to the restaurant and got ourselves a seat near the window. Alex wanted to go to the ladies and she set out. I was lucky to choose this hotel, if I am not mistaken a 4 star hotel near the end of Orchard. I hailed the waiter over while Alex was gone. I asked the waiter to change the settings on the table a little and gave him a $50 note to get me some flowers from the hotel’s florist (now you know why lucky). He understood and I ordered a bottle of their finest red wine. I knew by now my pocket was going to hurt a bit but I had to do what I had to do.

About 5 minutes later, Alex came back and was quite surprised with the lights turned down and there was a stand with 3 candles on our table. With beautiful music in the background, the waiter came with a bouquet of red roses on a silver tray. Alex didn’t look up and was overjoyed when she saw the waiter handing over the flowers to her. “Honey, what’s the occasion? It’s not my birthday it’s not yours, why?” Well, I had to at least wait till the end of dinner at least to do it. “Dear, yesterday was payday and I don’t remember bringing you to nice restaurants.” I just grinned, however I don’t think she bought it. Anyway, we had a nice dinner accompanied by red wine. Seriously, this merlot tasted good. No wonder it was about $300 a bottle.

“Dear, I have something to tell you.” I got her attention then I continued, “First, today I just got promoted.” She looked at me and smiled, “I know, I recommended you over to Mr. Wong. The company owes you a promotion.” What a let down, anyway, it was good that she’s vouching for me. “What’s the next thing you want to tell me?” I was still holding back for a while, maybe it was fear and maybe it was jitters, I tried to find my balls and took a deep breath, “Dear, you look beautiful tonight.” Alex raised a brow and then blushed. “Is that all you want to tell me?” Alex asked in a teasing and sexy voice. I can feel my lips going dry and I got up went over to the side of her chair and whispered, “I love you.” I gave her a peck on the cheek. Alex was taken back a little and was shocked at what I was doing.

I clumsily knelt down beside her; I nearly knocked over the next table. In shock, Alex stood up and looked at me. I held her both her hands, “Alex, we have been going out for quite some time. It was not such a difficult decision to make because you’re just too perfect. You’re beautiful, smart…” All the while I was looking into her eyes which are teary and she was smiling now. I took out the box that I’ve kept in my bag, opened it displaying a diamond ring. I started saying out loud, “Let everybody here bear witness, that I love you and will need your love in return forever! My love for you is unconditional. Alexandra, will you marry me!?” The whole place went silent and I can only hear the faint music in the background playing. Everybody was anticipating an answer and seconds seemed to be minutes. The long pause came to an end when Alex happily nodded and tears of happiness stated flowing. Claps and congratulations filled the room; I didn’t take notice of all this commotion and push the ring onto her finger. Perfect fit!
