Definetly not legal but at that time, Guangxi is like 没政府... I saw my clients charters the whole vessel and smuggles the goods he bought from me and have a navy vessel escort the break bulk ship into the port and have the navy cars transport the goods !!! all these thing were done in FangChengGang....

Re: SOUTHERN EXPEDITION (a personal trip to China’s Guangxi & Vietnam’s Quang Ninh)

Sorry for the long interlude. Life has been busy, but the slow CNY allows me to do a bit of catch up with my FR for the Southern Expedition… continuing from QZ…to

FANGCHENGGANG防城港

We took the bus from QZ Bus Terminal to FCG – there are frequent buses running, costing RMB19 for the one-hour trip. The buses are not too uncomfortable and they seem to double as cargo delivery service, since most travelers between these two towns only have hand-carried bags. One small truck arrived and parked next to our bus just before our departure, and proceeded to fill the compartment with god-know what – can be somewhat worrying, knowing the respect Chinese have for dangerous goods.

At the entrance to the FCG Bus Terminal

If QZ appears to be a town in a hurry, then Fangchenggang (FCG) appears to be a town being dragged into the modern living. There is literally a complete new town with wide boulevard, mulit-storey buildings, hotels and malls being build close to the old town. We went walkabout, the local folks appear to be friendly and simple – not unlike those I seen during my early years in China. Somehow, all the new modern multi-storey buildings seem so distance from the locals who seem to remain frozen in the 80s mode.

We stayed at the older port area of Gangkou District港口区, at a relatively new hotel called TianZhiLong天之龙 – great value for money at RMB130 with free broadband internet access but no breakfast (not a problem since many nearby places for cheap breakfast at RMB3-10). It’s slightly off the town center but reasonably convenient since it is close to XianRenShan Park仙人山公园 and one of the newer parts of town, and there are plenty of motorbike or motorised tri-cycle taxis – charging RMB2-4 to go around town.

The most common local transportation around town.- motorized tri-cycle

FCG also has high hopes for more tourists – big billboards introducing local tourist attractions, but EZ and me are not the quite the “normal” tourists

We have heard before our arrival that the old happening BBS street has been torn down to make way for development, and so we decided to check out the KTV scene first by going to the one at our hotel – afterall, it has a fancy name called 天上人间 – sounds familiar? But I’m sure it has no relation to those with similar name in other cities. We walked into place and was ignored – then EZ said there are MMs in OL-gear standing at the side entrance of the hotel lobby and maybe we should checked with them. We spoke to one and yes, they are working for the KTV – and yes, they have a small room at RMB288. LT asked if there is any MM to 陪唱 (a MM to accompany us singing lah!) – she said, yes, they can be arranged and “brought in” – so, we followed her to where we came from and was allocated a room. But this MM in OL-gear wasn’t too friendly and she left as soon as we were in the room. Luckily, there is another MM in the sport-wear gear and she looks like someone who is probably KJ. As it turned out, she is what they called waitress and to help order drinks, etc – we decided to “clarify” with her if they have anyone to陪唱. From what we can gathered from her, there is no MM available “inhouse”, but they can help to arrange them from outside, and the MMs in OL-gear are “搞营销的” (Sales Ladies) – these are employed by the ktv and they go around in butterfly style to drink with customers – similar to we called GROs in Singapore. We told this helpful MM that we rather go find our own 小妹 to 陪唱 and where can we find them? She confirmed what DaYe told us – the street that used to be full of 小姐 have been torn down for redevelopment. But there is another street where you can find XJs – she suggested we should go down to 天足 and look for shops that have red lights: “一看就知道了” she said (you will know when you see them) – and we decided to go hunting ourselves. We told her she should be the “Sales Ladies” since she is so much more customer-orientated than the MM in OL-gear, but she said she can’t drink alcohol. Those are GROs that help you to consume and therefore buy more drinks, and we speculate that they are probably paid a fixed salary and no commission since they all looked so “unmotivated” when we first approached them.

Re: SOUTHERN EXPEDITION (a personal trip to China’s Guangxi & Vietnam’s Quang Ninh)

EZ and me then hopped onto the motor-bike taxi of RMB4 ride and we ended up at a place that said “天足保健” located on Yuwan Road渔万路 towards the port area, and directly opposite the local fast food joint called BanYang榜样快餐. Yes, we are in business – there are BBSs scattered on what appear to be a main road. Time for hunting – we looked and checked on the price. It’ll be RMB100 onsite and RMB130 offsite for s/t and RMB500 o/n before 9:00pm and RMB400 o/n after 9:00pm.

We found TianZhu - cannot miss the big neon sign… and off we went looking for the BBSs

And we found the BBSs close to TZ – this is one of them…

And another BBS… this is actually the joint where EZ & me picked our two MMs…

We decided to pick two MMs from a joint – and they turned out to be friends from Guizhou – the neighboring province. We decided to have a night-out, going to KTV first. They suggested a place called 0770 on Sichuan Road with good sound system – but we found that all the rooms are fully booked – and it’s not even 9:00pm yet – must be popular. We then went to another joint called 嘉乐迪皇家会所 – and confirmed that the KTVs and nightclubs in FCG do not provide MMs. You have to BYO and they do not have KJs or Princess – the waiters & waitress came to take the order and occasionally returned to clear the table and take more orders. Indeed, the waiter appeared to be surprised when I tip him the loose change after paying our bills. The mid-size room for us cost RMB388 (of minimum charge) and the two fruit plates were complimentary.

The price of food is very reasonable in FCG – and our supper at a local noodle shop cost RMB22 and that was after I paid for the bowl of noodle for the friendly waitress who took our drink orders at the KTV earlier on and she was there for her supper. But a set meal at the western-style coffee-house will be about RMB20-25.

As for my Guizhou-mei, I had a good and extended physical session. But I had to let her go earlier because she was getting almost upset by the continuous sms messages. I had noticed that when we were at the KTV – and she confessed that her bf had just arrived the previous night. I teasingly asked if she is supporting her bf – but she insisted her bf does not even know she is in the game. She said, being the eldest, she had to bear the brunt of the financial support for her family (with one younger brother & another younger sister) since her father has been bed-ridden for the past couple of years. I know, we all heard the story before. I decided to let her go because I rather have a good night sleep. I made the mistake of not confirming with the mummy earlier at the BBS, the time that the MM is supposed to leave, but I would guess it is like early morning similar to most other places outside DG

We also checked out TZ the next day, just to help kill our time after we played tourist of exploring the TRS Park and the town area. Interestingly, both of us had male masseur allocated – first time for me in China, but it was a good – loosen my muscle to allow me to go with EZ to find other fun.

We found another area with BBSs – it was in the residential area bound by Yuwan, Guizhou and Yunnan Roads, next to the 361Deg shop. We noted many obviously under-aged MMs; indeed, one particular shy one looks no more than 12yo to me – wah – that kind of put me off and we both decided to be just “window shoppers” despite the mummies very enthusiastic promotions (actually there were a couple of them that I won’t mind sharing my bed on a cold night). We also saw an interesting building with bright neon lights near our hotel, that promised a one stop SN and more service. But we both decided to have a “quiet” night to do some real work, before we travel to the border town of Dongxing (DX) the next day.

Completed in 2003, the 9.2km Xiwan Bridge (西湾跨海大桥) joined FCG into the GX Coastal Highway 广西滨海公路 that goes all the way to DX.

WISHING ALL BROTHERS HAPPY YEAR OF TIGER – MAY IT BRINGS MORE ROARING GREAT BONKS!!!

Sharing a story of me and my girl that night. As LT mentioned, coincidentally, we picked 2 friends from Guizhou. Strangely at the joint, both of them weren't sitting together, you know what I mean? What I understand from my gal, all of them were from Guizhou actually.

You can even witness the pace of life in FCG from the general attitude of the gals. There are somewhat nonchalant, not as aggressive as the ones in DG. My gal was quite chatty, just that she had too much partying the day before and lost her voice. Once back in our rooms, somehow our conversation ventured into the impending CNY, and whether is she going back home which she has yet to confirm, and inevitably to the topic of marriage. Surprisingly, I got to know that my gal was a tiny bit younger than LT's gal. Then my gal mentioned that although she got a boyfriend back in hometown waiting for her, she is also torn between this one and her M'sian bf (aka Sugar Daddy) who comes regularly to FCG.

It wasn't intentional on my part to continue the conversation or probe any further, but my gal was certainly very open about it. She told me her M'sian bf has got an office in FCG, dealing in wood products, and even brought her to his office to show her around. She describe him to be relatively young, late 20s or early 30s can't remember, not married and no gf, that's why have been looking for a gf in FGC, China per se. Actually, why I say my gal was rather open about the topic was that, she would on and off throw me a question or two to ask me for my opinion on the matter, and I just replied a matter of factly.

First question she asked me, is the color of Malaysian passport Green? Interesting question, I never really thought about it, and I thought it was dark blue. So I said I really dunno. And she went on...

Do I think that guy is sincere? Wow! Another interesting question. I told her, I don't know the guy, haven't met him or dealt with him before, so I can't pass a judgement on his character. However, being a normal man myself, to me, there is a difference between coming out to play and looking for a gf. It would be rather interesting to look for gfs at certain locations, under certain circumstances, such as "ours" (I put it in a rather diplomatic way), not striking off as impossible, just that "we" will be faced with very challenging issues, going head on against social norms, etc.

She got the point and said she agrees totally. And she said, why she felt that M'sian bf is different is because, he has been in FCG for sometime now (or at least as far as she knows), and he has been like a somewhat repeat customer, and now a sponsor, or at least has offered to sponsor (that part I wasn't really concentrating so I just assume he is now the Sugar Daddy).

3rd Question was, the guy asked her to visit M'sia, she asked me how to get M'sian Visa. I said, it's very easy nowadays, but first she should get her passport done. I also asked her to really assess her situation and be cautious, there have been known cases of gals being cheated and then held against their intention and forced into prostitution.

She's quite street smart, she said she knows, and has watched the news. So I asked her and apparently she relationship with her Msian bf wasn't really the serious type, so where's the dilemma that she mentioned when she first started her questions? Then she gave her 2 sides of the story.

On 1 hand, she has a bf back in hometown, supposedly really innocent (as compared to her) as he hasn't been out to the big cities. However, just as he hasn't been out into the big cities, he is not as "sophisticated". On the other hand, her M'sian bf, has probably seen more of the world and therefore more "interesting".

She added a final comment that, she knows for sure she is not going to be together with her M'sian sugar daddy because of the way he treats her. And so I ask how did he treat her? She said, he has asked her to stay off work, will support her etc. However, he hasn't made any proposition of any regular contributions to her yet but he was generous whenever they meet, and sometimes when he is in town, he wants to have "it" for free but no way is she gonna let him get away with it for free... hahaha... I kinda crack up... when she made the comment.

Then I asked her, if that's the case, then there's no need to fret over it isn't it? (Actually, I was rather tired and losing concentration listening to her banter, haven't really get any action yet, wanted to end the topic and move on to something more "romantic"...haha..). Her final comment was, she knows, and as long as the M'sian Sugar Daddy continues to give, she will continue to take.

I decided I couldn't continue with the conversation any more, quickly diverted attention to something else, and proceed to hump her.

Thanks, bros PF & jdi813. I was just wondering if anyone actually reads this FR – but with your encouraging words, I’ll definitely try to complete it. As for details of MMs, I believe my “shuai-ge” EZ is better with that – will let him fill in the details with his usual pointed observations – afterall, he is my bait for the MMs.

Stay tune for the continuing expedition of EZ & LT – next stop Dongxing.

Bro ISO9002,

Thanks for the info on the colour of M'sian PP.

No need to comment, nothing to comment about the gals. Just state our own experience, and what you get out of it, which is exactly what I did all the time. Whether people get angry or not, you can't control anyway.

BTW, I don’t normally do this and I hope EZ doesn’t mind, I just want to let our 哥们 know that EZ and myself will be in CP on Sat 27Feb to spend the ChapNgoMay元宵节with my god-daughters – to carry on the ADF’s traditions. We will be in the neighborhood (actual itinerary after 元宵节not fixed but will probably include CA, HM, DS & GZO) for a couple of weeks on our usual biz cum pleasure trip. Hope to catch up with some old friends and perhaps put some faces to names/nicks. Those who know me, please do call me on my usual DG’s phone numbers during that time. Re: SOUTHERN EXPEDITION (a personal trip to China’s Guangxi & Vietnam’s Quang Ninh)

DONGXING 东兴

The bus ride from FCG to DX via the GX Coastal Highway 广西滨海公路took us 45mins and cost RMB10 each. It made a couple of very quick stops to pick up and drop off passengers. If my memory serves me right, there is a bus every 15 or 30mins on the smaller shuttle buses. DX is the municipality that is on the most south-western tip of China that borders the sea on Beibuwan北部湾. The present municipality was formed by the three old towns of DongXing东兴市区 (that’s where the Sino-Vietnam checkpoint is,) JiangPing江平镇& MaLu马路镇 towns, with a population of about 120,000. DX has historically being one of the major trading ports and is now one of the major gateways from China into Indo-China.

China and Vietnam share a 33km border, separated by the narrow Beilun River 北仑河 and one of the checkpoints is DX that is connected to MongCai on Vietnamese side to the south by the China-Vietnam Friendship Bridge中越友谊桥. This bridge symbolizes the increasing close economic relationship between the two countries since the Sino-Vietnamese war in 1979. The locals said DX was shelled during the brief war when China decided to teach the “little boy” a lesson for invading Kampuchea – but I am sure historians will argue over that. The new 111m bridge was built in 1994 and on the Chinese side, the old buildings are continuously being replaced by new ones. Indeed, many old buildings on the section on XinHua Road新华路 leading to the checkpoint were demolished during our visit, with the area supposedly to be redeveloped. DX is a lot better organized than I expected. Most border towns in Asian countries seem to be more of the “cowboy” town look – but this one has now developed into having multi-storey buildings and lots of construction that appears to be related to logistic industry. It jives with what I heard about Chinese wanting this to be one of the major gateways to Vietnam and Asean countries.

DX Bus Terminal

We arrived in heavy rain at the DX Bus Terminal, and there is no lack of offers to provide transportation to the hotel that we had reservation – the YinXing银星酒店. We decided to follow a lady that offered RMB10 – she then hailed down one of the common super mini-buses with a lady driver who is either her friend or associate, and we were on our way. YX claims to be 3-star for the new section that we stayed in, but like most Chinese hotels, it is long on promise but short on actual delivery. However, at RMB110/nite (no breakfast) it is still not too bad. The old section of hotel costs RMB90/nite but no internet connection.

Super mini-bus that runs around town – just hop on and off as they ply along the main roads of the town

With the rain still pouring down, there is not much we can do after lunch. For amusement, we decided to have a coffee near our hotel, at a cake shop staffed by a few cute SYTs – remember, I am using my EZ as bait. But the attempt to have a coffee was somewhat hilarious and I actually ended up having tea. We ordered black coffee with no sugar – but what we got was definitely white and sweet. When queried, the sweet young girl behind the counter swore that she did not add anything – and it was only after further “investigation” did we realized that she was telling the truth – but instead of using the coffee machine, she gave us the “premium” Vietnamese coffee that turned out to be a 3-in-1 pre-pack manufactured by Nestle Vietnam. She said that’s the only coffee she has, and the coffee machine was never used since very few customers ask for coffee. And so I decided to have tea – for which she promptly put three bags of my selected tea to give me one with strong body and aroma - all that with a big smile and most apologetically – aiyah, even old fart’s heart was melted and all was forgiven, especially when she confessed that she is new and have never drank coffee. Then hor, we never get to talk much to the SYTs – not even for my shuai-ge EZ – it was then I noticed a figure in the room behind the clear glass panel but was not obvious since the light was off. I told EZ that could be the supervisor keeping an eye on what’s happening outside in the shop, and sneakily checking on the staff.

We then checked out a foot-massage joint at the intersection between BaiLunDadao北仑大道 & XinHuaLu新华路. I forgot the name, but you can’t miss it due to its large signage next to the big roundabout at the junction of BLDD & XHL – also where you head to the checkpoint. This is a legitimate no hanky panky joint. We had a relaxing massage by two middle-age ladies (well, that is quite a change after the male masseurs we had at FCG) – one used to work in a DG factory and especially chatty; we enjoyed the BS session to kill time. As usual, EZ was telling the ADF family story – the ladies commented that it sounds like TV show, asking if I’m working in the TV industry and perhaps a screenwriter? But I insisted I’m a newly arrived fortune teller and will be pitching my stand near the checkpoint, since that’s one tourist spot where a lot of mainland tourists without the border-crossing pass or passport will head to. We also asked the ladies where would be a good place to go after our foot massage and they claimed they are too old for those activities. But what about their customers – who must have raved about certain places as “haowan” (好玩fun to pay) – no? Arrh… yeah, customers have mentioned F1, F3 & Olala… On our way out, we asked the ZiKe at the door the same question – and she said F1 & F3 are two popular places – sounds like we must head to either one of these places. But the newer F3 apparently has only ktv rooms, while the F1 has a big hall that also has shows. So, F1 it is going to be!
