Eight killed, 57 injured in Pattaya disco fire
QUOTE=singrakthai] I read somewhere that those killed were employees only[/QUOTE]
The 8 killed are only employees because the fire broke out at 9.30 p.m. and the disco hadn't opened for business yet - hence no customers were in the disco at that time. Among the 8 killed were coyote dancers from Bangkok (from a group of 60 dancers) |

Route 999 club dancer tells of lucky escape, rear doors locked
Report from The Nation dated Wednesday 10 May 2006 :-
Route 999 club dancer tells of lucky escape, rear doors locked A dancer yesterday revealed the details of her narrow escape from death in a fire in Pattaya's Route 999 nightclub, where eight of her co-workers died and more than 50 people were injured on Sunday night. Police, meanwhile, will summon the club's owner for questioning tomorrow after finding that two of the back doors to the building were locked from the outside, preventing those inside from escaping. Dancer Porntip Thamthaisong, 22, who had been working at the club for two months for Bt500 per night, said she was dressing backstage when the power was cut and someone screamed: "The place is on fire!", prompting her and 80 others to stampede toward the exits. "It was very hot and the smoke was so thick we couldn't see anything, and some of us started to choke," she said. "Five minutes later, the wall was knocked down by rescuers, who saved us." Porntip said other club employees passed out in the backstage room and died before help arrived. The club had two rear entrances, one where drinks were delivered and the other to serve the kitchen but on the night both were locked from the outside, she said. Rescue teams were delayed for vital moments because they were forced to cut their way through the locks before they could help the victims escape. Porntip said she believed there would have been fewer deaths and injuries if those attempting to escape had been able to open the doors. She said she would leave her job and return to her home in Bangkok because of the tragedy. An air-conditioning mechanic's welding torch reportedly sparked the blaze. The mechanic was among those killed. Police inspector Major Phumpat Namputthara said 20 witnesses had been summonsed so far and police would inspect the fire scene and investigate the locked back doors. If the club failed to measure up to security requirements, police would take legal action against the owner, he said. Deputy superintendent Lt-Colonel Chonpat Nawarat said police would gather evidence about the building's compliance with the law and summon Route 999 owner Wicha Baopimpa for questioning tomorrow. Meanwhile, Pattaya City Mayor Niran Wattanasartsathorn issued an order to seal the club off as a fire zone to prevent anyone from tampering with evidence before the inspection to determine if the building was illegally modified, in breach of the Building Control Act. --- KatoeyNewsNetwork |

Re: Pattaya, Thailand
Route 999 has 3 main sections
1) Live Band Section which is not so popular quite small inside too. 2) Disco section (dance around tall tables) with coyote dancers on narrow stage and in DJ - car booth. This section has coyote dancers - quite a small inside 3) Modelling section where girls parade up and down to music on a kind of catwalk. Not sure if the girls are coyotes or just models parading. They probably got the models and coyotes to multi-tasks as I remember no more than 10 coyotes in disco section but lots of models. This section also less crowded than disco section. If club not opened yet, perhaps, the dancers - girls - employees were in some kind of rest section and were kind of trapped? Hard to speculate. If your girl works there, she would probably be able to tell you the exact sequence of events but then, if your Thai is no good, then, it would not be easy to get a comprehensive first person account. Anyway, for those who have tiraks there or friends etc, good luck. I did like the club much too during a recent visit. S.
