Vietnamese man fined over $7,000 for smuggling ivory accessories into Singapore
By Staff reporters August 3, 2017 | 11:19 am GMT+7 The man even used his family to try and carry the contraband through the airport. A Vietnamese man was fined SGD10,000 ($7,360) on Wednesday for smuggling ivory products into Singapore, The Straits Times quoted a statement from the country's Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) as saying. Do Trong Hoang, 33, and his family were stopped upon arrival at Changi Airport on July 14 following a tip-off. The global trade in elephant ivory, with rare exceptions, has been outlawed since 1989 after populations of the African giants dropped from millions in the mid-20th century to around 600,000 by the end of the 1980s. In Singapore, those found guilty of illegally importing/exporting, possessing, trading or selling wildlife species, including their parts and products such as ivory, can be fined up to SGD500,000 and/or sentenced to two years in prison. Vietnam also outlawed the ivory trade in 1992, but the country remains a top market for ivory products which are prized locally for decorative purposes and for traditional medicine, despite there being no proof of its medicinal qualities. Weak law enforcement in the country has allowed a black market to flourish, and Vietnam is also a busy thoroughfare for tusks trafficked from Africa destined for other parts of Asia, mainly China. Singaporean authorities discovered two ivory bird cage accessories in his luggage, as well as four ivory bracelets on him and his family. The items were seized and Hoang was arrested. The smuggled products are understood to have been obtained in Vietnam, according to The Straits Times.

Stay safe and be careful...
One in 10 Vietnamese drug addicts living in Saigon By Le Phuong, Nam Phuong August 4, 2017 | 11:04 am GMT+7 The country's biggest city also accounts for 16 percent of new HIV cases reported nationwide. Ho Chi Minh City is fast becoming a hotspot for drugs, with nearly 22,000 registered addicts, accounting for around 10 percent of the national total, new figures show. Bui Thi Xuan Mai, a senior lecturer at the University of Labor and Social Affairs, said at a conference on Thursday that the number of addicts in Vietnam has been increasing by around 10 percent a year to more than 210,000 at the present. She was citing figures compiled by the labor and social affairs ministry. A growing number of young Vietnamese and students are becoming addicted, according to the ministry. While the southern hub tops the list, Hanoi comes second with around 13,000 addicts, followed by nearly 9,500 users in the northern mountainous province of Dien Bien. Drug smuggling from Vietnam’s neighbors such as China, Laos and Thailand has been increasing, while drug-related crimes are also on the rise, officials said at the meeting. Mai said drug addicts used to be classed as criminals and were put into compulsory rehabilitation centers, but new policies treat them as patients and some are open to voluntary treatment. Mai said drug addicts used to be classed as criminals and were put into compulsory rehabilitation centers, but new policies treat them as patients and some are open to voluntary treatment. Experts said drug use remains a major cause of HIV in the country. A new report from the Ministry of Health said more than 3,500 people tested positive for HIV in the first five months this year, down 11 percent from the same period last year. But new cases increased in both Hanoi and Saigon, which respectively reported 311 and 572 new patients, together accounting for more than a quarter of the nationwide figure. Marie-Odile Emond, UNAIDS's country director, said new HIV cases in Vietnam had fallen from 28,000 a year in the early 2000s to 11,000 last year, but that was still not enough. A United Nations report released last month listed Vietnam among 10 countries which together accounted for over 95 percent of all new HIV infections in the Asia-Pacific region in 2016. The others were China, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and Thailand. Health officials said in June that Vietnam has started trialing the HIV prevention pill PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) at several clinics in HCMC to assess the success of the drug and decide if it should be included in the national HIV prevention program.

Giant birds' nests offer the perfect place to roost by the sea in central Vietnam

These huts on Binh Lap Peninsula in Cam Ranh Town in the central province of Khanh Hoa look like giant bird nests from the outside, but inside they are comfy guest rooms. To lounge in the sun, take a paddle out to this giant hammock. Click here to read whole news. http://e.vnexpress.net/news/travel-l...m-3622913.html

Vietnamese cabbie pays the price for ripping off South Korean tourist in Da Nang
By Staff reporters August 7, 2017 | 10:32 am GMT+7 The transport department stepped in for the first time after he allegedly charged the passenger $30 for a $2 journey. A taxi driver in the central city of Da Nang has been suspended and is facing dismissal for overcharging a South Korean tourist. The driver allegedly drove a South Korean woman from Da Nang International Airport to a hotel on An Thuong 26 Street, less than 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) away, on Friday evening. He then charged her VND700,000 ($30.8) for the journey, despite the meter only showing VND50,000. The hotel informed Le Van Trung, director of the city's Department of Transport, of the incident via text message. The department and the Da Nang Taxi Association identified the driver as Nguyen Truong Giang from the Hai Van taxi company using camera footage from the area and company records, according to Phap Luat Plus. Giang and a representative from Hai Van met the tourist on Sunday to apologize and return her money, following instructions from the department. The taxi company has also assigned a Korean-speaking driver to drive her for free for the entire duration of her stay in Da Nang, in addition to paying for her hotel fees, the newspaper reported. A representative from the company said Giang has been suspended and will be fined and fired for his actions. The unfortunate incident has tainted Da Nang's image, Phap Luat Plus quoted Bui Thanh Thuan, deputy director of the city's Department of Transport, as saying. This is the first time transport officials have stepped in to deal with taxi drivers who overcharge, he added.

Korean men caught at 'wife shop' in Saigon
By Nhat Vy August 4, 2017 | 04:47 pm GMT+7 The girls were lined up in the hope of finding a new life overseas. Police in Ho Chi Minh City raided a hotel on Thursday and caught four South Korean men picking wives from a group of six Vietnamese girls at an illegal marriage brokerage service. Preliminary investigations revealed that the service was organized by a group of brokers led by a South Korean man, who connected Vietnamese girls with foreign husbands. The group changed location repeatedly in HCMC and Binh Duong Province to escape authorities. Cases of Vietnamese women offering themselves as wives for Korean, Chinese and Taiwanese men are not uncommon in Vietnam. Most of these girls come from poor families and have a vision of a better life overseas. Media reports suggest that many young Vietnamese women meet their future South Korean husbands through illegal brokerage services. Statistics show that almost 40 percent of those marriages end in divorce within five years. Some blame cultural and language differences for the break-ups, while others say they have been abused by their husbands and new families. According to immigration data published by The Korea Times, 147,295 Vietnamese people were living in South Korea at the end November last year, accounting for 7.4 percent of all expats.

This noodle soup is one more reason why you should visit Phu Quoc
By Huong Chi August 6, 2017 | 10:27 am GMT+7 Forget the beaches and jungle for a second, and get your chops around a bowl of this. There aren't many excuses not to visit Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s pearl off the southern coast. Yes, there are a lot of resorts popping up, but if you turn your back on them and check out the beautiful long beaches and fishing villages, you will have nothing to complain about, especially after your tastes buds are satisfied with the fresh seafood. One dish you must try is a noodle soup called bun quay, or stirred noodles, and you should know that its name is not figurative. The noodles originate from the central region where they are only served with ground shrimp, but then they were brought to Phu Quoc Island in 1995. Islanders on Phu Quoc took the taste to a new level by adding fish, squid and other ingredients. http://e.vnexpress.net/news/travel-l...c-3622382.html For this dish, everyone has their hands full: the cook has to stir the soup while you have to stir the sauce. First you have to wait in line to create your own sauce from fish sauce, sugar, chili and kumquat. Then you move into another line to order your noodles and wait for the cooks do their magic. Noodles are made on site from rice flour. The cook puts a paste made from ground shrimp, fish and squid into bowls and adds onions and herbs, before pouring the boiling water that is used to make the noodles with all over and starts stirring. The noodles are added later. Bun quay is loved for its natural sweet taste, which all comes from the fresh seafood. You can easily find bun quay on Phu Quoc Island, but if you want a true taste of this unique dish, go to Kien Xay at 222 Tran Phu Street in Duong Dong Town or Bach Dang Park. Have fun stirring your noodles!
