I wasn't expecting a reply at all. The bus ride home felt long as I contemplated my future.

Maybe I was too rushed in making my decision to leave the army. But I didn't know where my passion went. I wasn't young anymore, and without any good qualifications, I could not realistically work in a good job.

It was still early by the time I got home and strangely my parents were still out. I put back the bedsheets and lay on the bed. The smell of the laundromat detergent was strangely comforting.

I didn't realise but by the time I woke it was near midnight. I had slept all the way through dinner. My mom had texted me asking if I wanted to eat, but receiving no reply I guess they went ahead without me.

Ann texted me too. She asked if I was ok, and sort of apologised for her children's reaction to me. Perhaps it was still too early to meet them.

I randomly logged into sbf and saw a notification for a private message. It was the reply.

He was ok to meet for a coffee. And he left his number. I thought about it for awhile before sending a text.

"Bro EoS, I'm Shrouded. Are you ok if we meet tonight?"

I went to wash my face. Returning to the room. I received a reply.

"Ok. Meet me at xxx in an hour."

He gave me the location for a random 24hr eating place in the east. It would be my second time in the east today. I booked a grab and headed down, arriving just shy of the hour mark.

"I'm here."

"Smoking at car park."

I walked to the car park and kept an eye out for anyone smoking. There was one guy under a lamppost. From afar, he looked average. I went closer.

Me: Eos?

EoS: Yeah.

Me: I'm Mark.

EoS: EoS.

We shook hands.

He looked like an ex-regular who left the force for a couple of years. Not really in shape but not really out of shape. Still kept rather short hair and plastic spectacles.

I took out my pack and joined him.

EoS: So, you wanted to talk?

Me: I think reading your stories, you seem to have a lot of experience in dealing with certain situations. And you did show interest in how my story progressed. Unlike others who PM asking for Ann's contact.

EoS: I see. Well, your story resonated with one of my experiences. So I wanted to know more.

Me: Which one?

EoS: The married lady.

Me: Oh.

EoS: As you know things didn't really work out and it took me awhile to get over it.

Me: That's actually why I PM you. I need some advice about my situation.

I told him all that had happened. I felt that he was someone who wouldn't judge me, and might have some advice for me moving forward.

We chatted for a couple of hours before I decided it was time to go home. I did get some advice from him but I didn't know if it would work in my situation.

I checked my phone and saw a couple of missed calls and texts from Ann.

I decided to call her even though it was almost 4am. She answered almost immediately.

Ann: Are you ok? You didn't reply to any of my messages?

Me: I'm ok.

Ann: Are you sure?

Me: Yeah.

Ann: Where are you now?

I told her the location.

Ann: Don't leave. I'll come and get you.

Me: It's late. Go and sleep.

Ann: I want to talk to you.

Me: Ok.

Ann: Give me 15 minutes.

I hung around the car park smoking and waiting for her to arrive.

It was weird. She just came back into my life and she was acting very needy.

I wondered if I should just follow one of EoS advice.

Carpe diem, he said, which means seize the day, or something like that.

I think he was probably referring to this opportunity I had for a proper relationship, a chance at some sort of happiness with someone who I connected with and had feelings for, despite the current situation.

Perhaps Ann and I could talk about it properly once she arrived.
