Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Government of Indonesia is banning all civil servants from playing GPS-based games, such as Pokemon Go, as the mobile-based game is considered a threat to national security.

The Minister of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Yuddy Chrisnandi stated here in an official letter on Thursday that all civil servants are banned to play the augmented reality game around government institution buildings "as a form of national vigilance and to prevent the possible vulnerability of government installations and security."

Moreover, the game may also affect the productivity and the discipline of civil servants while on duty, he said.

"We are doing a preventive measure to maintain national security. We should not endanger national stability for any small risk," Chrisnandi said.

The high-tech features of the game are making government officials afraid as they can be used for spying activities.

Indonesians have been joining the frenzy of Pokemon Go, since its launch two weeks ago.

The growing popularity of Pokemon Go, which was developed for iOS and Android devices, makes use of GPS and the camera of compatible devices.

The game allows players to capture, battle, and train virtual creatures called Pokemons, such as a cuddly yellow Pikachu, who appears on device screens as though in the real world.

However, during a couple of weeks of it becoming a worldwide hit, the game has already been blamed for a wave of crimes, traffic violations and complaints in cities around the globe.

Media reports indicated that the game was used by four teens in Missouri to lure nearly a dozen of their victims into armed robberies.

Meanwhile, social media is also buzzing with reports of players, who have suffered minor injuries from tripping and falling while staying glued to their cell phones looking for Pokemons.

Indonesia sank dozens of impounded foreign boats to mark Independence Day, an official said on Wednesday, as President Joko Widodo steps up a campaign to stop foreign fishermen from "stealing" in its waters.

Since elected, President Joko Widodo has intensified a campaign to exercise Indonesia's maritime sovereignty and has sunk and blown up scores of foreign vessels.

"Today we offer 60 boats to be scuttled in eight locations," fisheries ministry official, Mas Achmad Santosa, said.

"This is a gift (for Indonesia) and goes to show our consistency in enforcing the law," Santosa added.

But unlike past boat-sinking events, which were broadcasted on national television, Wednesday's ceremony was markedly toned down, with officials barring media coverage.

Officials have also refused to disclose the vessels' countries of origin.
Previously, Indonesia has scuppered boats from countries including China, Vietnam and Philippines, with Beijing particularly angered by the gesture.

Tension between Jakarta and Beijing has escalated in recent months as Chinese fishing boats have clashed with Indonesian government vessels, prompting Widodo to visit the Natunas islands on a warship in June.

On Tuesday, he pledged to defend "every inch" of Indonesia's land and maritime territory in a state-of-the-nation address.

Unlike several of its Southeast Asian neighbours, Indonesia has long maintained it has no maritime disputes with China in the South China Sea and does not contest ownership of any territory there.

But Beijing's claims overlap Indonesia's exclusive economic zone - waters where a state has the right to exploit resources - around the Natunas.

Indonesian plantation company Sampoerna Agro is considering how to respond to a recent court ruling that handed down the country's largest ever fine to a company linked to forest fires, a company official said on Monday.

"We're still studying this," Sampoerna Agro spokesman Michael Kesuma told Reuters when asked whether the company would appeal the decision.

Kesuma referred to a Jakarta court ruling on August 11 that found Sampoerna unit PT National Sago Prima negligent in relation to fires on 3,000 hectares of its concessions in Riau in 2014, and handed down fines totaling 1.07 trillion rupiah ($81.62 million).

According to a spokesman at Indonesia's environment ministry, the fine is the biggest ever to be handed down to a company linked to fires.

Five other lawsuits are currently being pursued by the government against companies linked to forest fires, environment ministry spokesman Novrizal said in a written statement.

An intensification of law enforcement by Indonesia could help deter companies and individuals from using fire to clear land.

Last year PT Kalista Alam was fined 366 billion rupiah in relation to fires in Aceh province.

Indonesia's efforts to penalize companies allegedly responsible for its annual forest fires suffered a setback in late 2015 when a judge rejected a $565 million lawsuit against a pulp and paper firm, PT Bumi Mekar Hijau.

Fires in Indonesia, often set in the dry season by companies clearing land for plantations, cause an annual "haze" crisis that blankets large parts of the region in choking smog.

Home to the world's third-largest area of tropical forests, Indonesia has been criticized by green activists and by neighboring Southeast Asian nations for failing to stop the annual haze.

The heavy smoke from slash-and-burn clearing often comes from the islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan, where large forest concessions are used by pulp and paper and palm oil companies, some of which are listed in Singapore.

Singapore said in June it was planning to prosecute Indonesian polluters in Singapore courts under the Transboundary Haze Pollution Act.

The news that angry mobs attacked several Buddhist Temples in Tanjung Balai, North Sumatra, last Saturday was certainly seen by many as a depressing sign of Indonesia’s growing religious intolerance. The mobs, supposedly angered after news about a local woman of Chinese descendent complaining about a mosque’s loudspeaker went viral on social media, went on to burn, damage and loot a number of temples.

The mob violence has been roundly condemned, with President Joko Widodo having ordered law enforcers to take firm action against the attackers. Police have already arrested at least 12 in connection with the incidents and things appear to be calm in Tanjung Balai once again.

Despite all that, the fact that such an incident could occur at all seems to fit a pattern of growing religious intolerance and ethnic tension in Indonesia, one which is especially sad considering how many of the country’s basic principles are about respecting other cultures and creating unity through diversity.

Which is why we were so happy to see these videos of Muslim students in Tanjung Balai coming together to help rebuild and fix the damage at the temples caused by the mobs. They were posted yesterday on Facebook and quickly went viral, having been shared well over 10,000 times already.

We know how easy it is to get depressed thinking about the rising religious intolerance in Indonesia. But let’s never forget, the vast majority of Indonesians truly do believe in unity in diversity and helping out their neighbors, no matter what their beliefs. These young people represent the real Indonesia, the country we love.

Back in March, a massive and sometimes violent protest by taxi and other public transportation drivers against the rise of ride-hailing app services such as Uber and GrabCar took place throughout Jakarta. Today, it’s the drivers of the so called “online taxis” that are set to protest, demonstrating against new regulations that they say are unfairly hurting their industry. And organizers say they are ready to bring 1,000 drivers to the street to have their voices heard.

After last March’s protest and numerous other legal clashes over the legality of ride-hailing apps, the government eventually decided to create new regulations that would allow services like Uber, GrabCar and GoCar to operate normally in Indonesia. These new regulations are set to go into force at the beginning of October.

However, the protesters say these new regulations are proving too difficult to comply with, putting unjust burdens and costs on the company’s partner drivers.

"Some of the points in [the new regulations], hurt online taxi drivers. One of them is the provision that we all obtain public transport SIM A type driver’s licenses," said Andryawal Simanjuntak, one of the protest’s coordinators, when contacted by Kompas on Sunday.

Andryawal pointed out that the cost of obtaining the special driver’s license cost each applicant around Rp 1 million to Rp 1.5 million. The driving simulation test applicants must pass is also notoriously difficult.

Another sticking point in the new regulation is the vehicle roadworthiness tests (KIR) that all cars registered with ride hailing companies are required to take. Andryawal said that taking the test registers the car as a public transport vehicle, which would force drivers to forfeit their private auto insurance, opening them up to all sorts of risks.

The regulations also require that each driver’s car be licensed to a public transport company collective, which is impossible to do for cars which are not still being paid for in installments.

An an example of how difficult the new regulations are to meet, the Indonesian Car Rental Businessmen Association (PPRI), a cooperative working with GrabCar, says only 966 cars out of a total 5,000 have passed the KIR test so far, and only 50 of their drivers have attained the type A SIM license. Other cooperatives are reporting similar numbers.

The protesters argue that the government should revoke the new regulations as the ride hailing services offer an opportunity to reduce the country’s unemployment rate by providing vital jobs.

"The rule are detrimental to us. This policy only empowers large employers and is a form of monopoly,” Andryawal said.

Today’s protest are set to start at 11am today and will take place in front of the the State Palace, the Ministry of Transportation and the House of Representatives.

JAKARTA: The Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) is monitoring Batam-based religious radio station HangFM after Singapore authorities said it propagates extremist views.

Speaking to Channel NewsAsia on Monday (Aug 22), the head of KPI's Riau chapter Azwardi said: “We have had a dialogue with them and we continue to monitor them.”

The broadcasting regulatory body in Riau province said if the station is found to have violated rules with the content of its broadcasts, it may be subject to airtime limits and could even see its licence taken away after warning letters have been issued.

HangFM was thrust into the spotlight after Singapore's Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said two Internal Security Act detainees - Rosli Hamzah and Mohamed Omar Mahadi - had become radicalised after listening to the radio station from 2009 and 2010 respectively.

Subsequently, both men were introduced to radical materials online including Islamic State (IS) propaganda and they were prepared to fight for IS in Syria and die as "martyrs".

Mr Azwardi said Radio HangFM was issued a warning in 2014 after a number of Islamic organisations in Batam protested against its content, calling it “divisive”. They said the content of the broadcasts violated the rules of Islam and divided the Muslim community, he added.

“We admit that maybe the religious teachers we have had on air may have been lacking in eloquence when it comes to public speaking. However, if they have said anything that could have been misconstrued, I have always corrected them,” said station manager Abu Yusuf.

“Even if one word is proven to encourage radical ideologies, we will be shut down immediately,” Mr Zein Alatas, commissioner of Radio HangFM, said to Channel NewsAsia over the phone.

“The allegations have had negative repercussions on us. Our families are traumatised and the people at the mall we are located next to are fearful of us,” he added.

HangFM has asked to meet the Singaporean consulate in Batam to provide clarification.

SINGAPORE: Demonstrators gathered outside the Singapore Embassy in Jakarta on Tuesday (Aug 23) as it was opening its doors for people to sign a condolence book for Singapore's late former President S R Nathan.

In a post on Facebook, the Singapore Embassy in Jakarta wrote that a group of demonstrators from Pemuda Panca Marga (PPM), a pro-military organisation, had gathered at the embassy to protest the "alleged mistreatment" of retired Indonesian army general Suryo Prabowo at Changi Airport on Aug 17.

Mr Suryo was stopped by officers at Singapore's Changi Airport last Wednesday as part of "screening procedures for border security", according to a statement by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA). The statement said that he was interviewed by checkpoint officers for 30 minutes, and was allowed to board his flight after the interview.

According to Indonesian media, Mr Suryo complained on social media about being "blacklisted" while in transit at Changi Airport after arriving from Fiji.

The Indonesian Military (TNI) Chief General Gatot Nurmantyo lodged a note of protest with the Singapore defence attache in Indonesia over the incident, according to Antara News. "We have written to the Foreign Ministry to lodge a note of protest with Singapore. Who knows, I may be blacklisted in Singapore anytime in the future," he told Anatara.

Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arrmanatha Nasir told The Jakarta Post that a similar name might have caused the delay. "Immigration has said that it was a routine inquiry by immigration authorities due to the common name," Ms Arrmanatha said.

Said the Singapore Embassy in Jakarta: "Despite the demonstration outside, the signing of the condolence book proceeded uninterrupted inside the embassy. We would like to extend our thanks to the Jakarta police for ensuring law and order, as well as the safety of the embassy during this period."

It added: "This was a suitable moment to recall what Mr S R Nathan had once said about the qualities needed to be a successful Foreign Service Officer of Singapore: patience, calmness, modesty, empathy and good humour. Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Military (TNI) Chief, General Gatot Nurmantyo, has written to the Foreign Ministry to lodge a note of protest with Singapore against the action of its immigration authorities against former chief of general staff, Lieutenant General (ret) Suryo Prabowo.

"The TNI has coordinated (with other relevant agencies). Likewise, the chief of Bais (the militarys strategic intelligence agency) has lodged a note of protest with the (Singapore) defense attach in Indonesia," Nurmantyo stated after opening the fourth national karate tournament at the TNI Headquarters Sports Stadium here on Friday.

He was responding to a report that Suryo Prabowo, who had just arrived from Fiji by Fiji Airways flight FJ361, was denied entry to Singapore while he was transiting through the Changi Airport on Wednesday (Aug 17).

"We have written to the Foreign Ministry to lodge a note of protest with Singapore. Who knows I may be blacklisted in Singapore anytime in the future," he exclaimed.

He expressed regret over the fact that the Singapore immigration authorities did not explain the reason for blacklisting the former Indonesian military soldier.

"They should offer an apology and help Mr Suryo arrange his flight," he demanded.

It turned out that they did not offer any apology, he said.

"As the chief of TNI, I am not pleased with the way the Singapore government has treated the former TNI soldier," he noted.
