Angry Rafa blasts boardroom skullduggery

Rafael Benitez has held trans-Atlantic discussions with Liverpool co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett over his future at Anfield.

The Liverpool boss left Anfield after his side's 3-1 win over Blackburn to return to his Cheshire home for an exchange of e-mails with the American duo, after it was revealed that chief executive Rick Parry was party to meetings they had late last year with Jurgen Klinsmann.

The former Germany manager was being lined up as a possible replacement for Benitez at the time that his relationship with the owners was at an all-time low.
But Benitez claims he only discovered yesterday from media reports that Parry had attended meetings in the US with Klinsmann and his advisors `on instruction' from the club's owners.
The Spaniard was clearly furious after the Blackburn victory having discovered who was involved in what he believed were meetings behind his back.
But he now believes those meetings took place in the full knowledge of Parry, who, he claims, did not inform him of his involvement.
Benitez insisted that he would be discussing the situation with his agent, aware that Valencia, Inter Milan, Barcelona and Real Madrid are interested in his services.
The answers he receives from the owners will dictate his position at the end of the season, but he will not walk away ahead of the Champions League semi-finals with Chelsea and is intent on winning the trophy for the second time for the Reds.
But the manager's whole future at the club is now in doubt as further revelations over exactly who was party to the meetings with the German and his advisors.
Benitez, who was delighted with a performance that saw Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and Andriy Voronin score the goals to beat Rovers, said: 'I am surprised at things I have read, I need some clarification about a meeting that took place involving a lot of people that I did now know about.
'I need to ask questions and I want some answers. I want to clarify things. I am really calm, but I want answers.'
Roque Santa Cruz replied in injury-time for Rovers, but Liverpool further cemented their grip on fourth spot to take a five-point lead over Everton and a positive goal difference of 12 that, in effect, is worth another point with just four games left.
But Benitez had his pleasure at the result soured by yet more boardroom problems.
He added: 'What concerned me was the people who were in the meeting, that was a surprise.
'We [the coaching staff and the players] are professionals and we know we must be focused on football, and we will try to do this.
'It is not affecting the players. They are winning and they know we must finish in the top four and progress in the Champions League. We must stay focused on football.'

More drama unfolds....

As long as someone dun talk as if he own this thread, belittling fellow reds for sharing their views and asking liverpool fans to switch their support to other teams, i think anyone is free to post here. If the same boorish behaviour persist, I guess u will see the whole list of brothers who stood up for their views and rights, standing up again.

I second to that...
No point talking to someone who is so firm on his thinking and views.
Now who is eating his words on the rotation policy.

Hicks brands Parry's Liverpool reign 'a disaster'

Tom Hicks today branded Rick Parry's leadership as Liverpool chief executive 'a disaster' and warned co-owner George Gillett that the stalemate over the club's future will continue until he agrees to sell his stake.

Hicks has demanded Parry's resignation and vowed that his top priority if Gillett were to sell to him would be to offer Reds manager Rafael Benitez a one-year extension to his current deal.

The Texan also revealed that he plans to rid the club of all debt by heading up a group of financial backers willing to invest in the club.

Hicks blamed Parry for Liverpool's failure to compete commercially with their Premier League rivals in a Sky Sports News interview.

'Look at what's happened under Rick's leadership. It has been a disaster,' claimed Hicks. 'We have fallen so far behind the other leading clubs.

'We should have the stadium built three or four years ago. We have two or three major sponsors when we should have 12 or 15.

'We are not doing anything in Asia, the way that Manchester United and Barcelona are, and we have a tremendous number of fans in Asia.

'We have still got the top brand in the world of football but that's no good if you don't know how to commercialise it.

'Rick needs to resign from Liverpool FC. He has put his heart into it but it is time for a change.

'You have to be able to work with the manager and Rick has proved he can't do that. At the first meeting we had with Rafa he talked of the number of players he had missed out on because he (Parry) was too slow. Too many times nothing happens.'

Turning to his relationship with Benitez, Hicks said: 'If I were to buy George out the first thing I would do is offer Rafa a one-year extension to make sure he is going to be here up to when we get the stadium.

'Hopefully we could have some success and then extend him again.

'I think we will continue to have success. I think Rafa has unique skills, he motivates the team and we have some great players who are learning how to play with each other.'

Hicks and Gillett took over the club in February 2007 but Hicks admitted their relationship has now completely broken down.

'At this point it is unworkable,' he added. 'We started this as friends but 50-50 is a difficult business proposition because you cannot do anything without your partner's approval.

'If George doesn't sell - because I am not going to sell - I guess we stay in this position that we are in.

'I am planning to make him a very attractive offer. If I had a majority on it (ownership of Liverpool) I could put more capital in.

'My goal is take all the debt off the club except the working capital needed and get the permanent financing totally in place for the stadium.

'I want the finances of the club to be secure. I want to be the majority owner of a group that buys the club and I have got a 25-year track record of being a very successful investor around the world.

'The fans don't like the fact that we borrowed a lot of money to buy the club but I will fix that.'

Hicks ruled out any chance of Dubai International Capital (DIC) taking over but admitted he had held meetings with them in the past.

'DIC has no seat at the table. They are masters of the British tabloid spin. They want to stir the pot of Liverpool to create dissension,' he said.

'I did talk to Dubai about being a 49% partner but it just didn't work out. They didn't share the same vision I have and I didn't think they could become minority partners. I am not going to have any more 50-50 partners.'

On the infamous meeting in New York last year about Klinsmann becoming manager which undermined Benitez, Hicks added: 'George became good friends with him (Klinsmann) a year ago.

'I get this call from George out of the blue in which he says `have your people do their research on Klinsmann'. He and Rick set up the meeting in New York. I did go to the meeting along with my son Tom.

'Rick Parry had already met with Jurgen alone for a couple of hours when we arrived. We all then spoke to him for another four hours.

'Afterwards I told the truth to a reporter who asked the question and suddenly it is `Tom Hicks tried to get Jurgen Klinsmann'. George initiated it but we all participated.'

Hicks admitted it was frustrating that his unpopularity with Liverpool fans has prevented him from bringing his whole family to Anfield to watch matches.

'My family loves Liverpool. The sad thing is that right now we can't go there as a family until we get this thing sorted out,' he added.

Gillett has offered his support to Parry and revealed last week that any attempt to remove him would need the approval of the full board.

And Parry told Radio Four's Today programme: 'It's for the board to ask me to resign and they haven't. I'm accountable to the board and this is not something the board has discussed with me.

'I have a duty at the moment to try and keep things on an even keel when there's turmoil off the pitch. I just want to do my best for the club.

'I'm focusing on the day to day. We have a Champions League semi-final coming up. There are a lot of important things to be done at the club and that's the focus.'

Parry again expressed his disappointment that the club's 'dirty linen' was being washed in public, adding: 'There's a Liverpool way, which I think I understand and will stick to, and there is clearly a different way.' -soccernet

Re: Liverpool Fc Anfield - Reds Supporters Gatherings

I'll never sell my shares to Hicks, storms Gillett

George Gillett tonight called on his Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks to stop causing turmoil at the club and insisted he will never sell his shares to his fellow American.

Gillett and Hicks, who each own 50% of Liverpool, have fallen out completely with neither prepared to let the other take over the club.

Hicks has also branded Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry's reign 'disastrous' and in a TV interview today reiterated his demand that he resign.

But Gillett has thrown his weight full square behind Parry.

He said in a statement: 'I am saddened at this latest outburst from Tom Hicks. If Tom wanted a serious discussion on the issues to help the club move forward, he should bring his views to the board and not to Sky Sports.

'Here we are, a few days away from a vital Champions League semi-final match and Tom has once again created turmoil with his public comments.

'Tom should stop. He knows that Rick Parry has my support and that airing his comments in this way will not change my position.

'His failure to discuss this with the Board or the management committee is significant.'

Hicks also claimed that it was Gillett and Parry who were the forces driving November's negotiations with Jurgen Klinsmann, something that Gillett disputes.

He added: 'I was also taken aback by his version of the events as reported. Tom needs to understand that I will not sell my shares to him and that we need to find a way forward that is properly funded and truly in the best interests of Liverpool Football Club.

'The real business of winning matches and running and developing the club is what we should all be focused on at this moment.'

Hicks has admitted his relationship with Gillett is now 'unworkable'.

'We started this as friends but 50-50 is a difficult business proposition because you cannot do anything without your partner's approval,' said Hicks.

'If George doesn't sell - because I am not going to sell - I guess we stay in this position that we are in.

'I am planning to make him a very attractive offer. If I had a majority on it (ownership of Liverpool) I could put more capital in.

'My goal is to take all the debt off the club except the working capital needed and get the permanent financing totally in place for the stadium.'

Hicks also said that Dubai International Capital - who have been trying to buy out both Americans - 'do not have a seat at the table'.

A DIC source said however: 'DIC will not rest until they own Liverpool Football Club. However long it takes.'

Parry also insisted he had no intention of resigning.

He said: 'It's for the board to ask me to resign - and they haven't. There's a Liverpool way which I will stick to and clearly there's a different way.

'I think I have a responsibility, indeed a duty, at the moment to try to keep things on an even keel when there's a degree of turmoil off the pitch.

'I just want to do my best for the club. The club will survive, we've got a Champions League semi-final coming up, there are a lot of important things to be done at the club.'

I find it strange Gillette never countered Hicks' claim about tapping Kinsmann. Won't be surprised if they are all in cahoots, Parry included.
