Politics takes toll on tourism, reports TAT
Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 21 March 2006 :-
Politics takes toll on tourism, reports TAT About 65,000 tourists have cancelled trips to Thailand due to political factors, according to Juthamas Siriwan, the governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). The trips had been booked mainly by Chinese and Singaporean tourists for March and April. The development was a negative sign for the industry, Ms Juthamas told a panel chaired by caretaker deputy prime minister Somkid Jatusripitak yesterday. About 5,000 Singaporeans had cancelled trips to Thailand for the Songkran festival in April, she said. As well, chartered flights from China for 50,000 passengers and regular flights for another 10,000 had been called off this month due to political turmoil. She anticipated falling visitor numbers from Japan too, because there had been few bookings from the country. However, Ms Juthamas said: "If there is no violence from the protests, we expect the business will return to normal." The Federation of Thai Tourism Associations (Fetta) has called for all parties involved in ongoing political dispute to sit down at a negotiating table and end the trouble as soon as possible. "The government, former opposition parties and anti-government demonstrators should talk to end the dispute to bring peace to the country and the people as soon as possible. They should do it before everything is too late," Fetta said in a statement. The federation has also pleaded with the government not to declare a state of emergency."We believe the government will not announce a state of emergency since the government is well aware that the announcement would seriously affect the country in terms of investment, tourism and overall business environment. "Once such damage to businesses occurs, it will take several years to remedy and reinstate people's confidence in the country's safety." The TAT is sending officials to talk to Chinese and Japanese media representatives this week about Thai politics in a bid to restore confidence. A fall in tourism could severely affect the country's revenue from trade in services. The TAT estimated that 427 billion baht would come from the tourism industry this year, a rise of 18% from the year before. In the first two months of the year, the tourism industry showed impressive growth of more than 30% when compared with the same period last year, due to more travellers from Europe. Dr Somkid said that revenue from tourism, exports and investment remained sound for the first two months, adding that he wanted to keep the deficit from trade in services in check. |

Bro KTL,
Think you missed out SRT's angle, neither was he taking cover. No need to take pot shots at your neighbouring cousins (again). Such negative vibes only undo all your other good stuff here, and invite spell bee lessons from SC. ![]()

Peace to the World
In posting 59 of this thread at page4, there is this newspaper report pasted by KatoeyLover69. In it there is this line quoted by a Thai Citizen and maybe we all should learn something out of it.
I am not super patriotic. But just that some name tags that come with it on the whole isn't fair to all. Mr Chakchai said: 'Yes, you have to distinguish between the country and its people, and between the country and its government. The government is not the country. It's just like we dislike the Thai government but we don't dislike Thailand.' Some people may not like Singapore government or maybe certain Singapore Citizens. But there is no need to make use of opportunities to take potshots at Singaporeans. Happen 1 or twice, still close eye and let it be. But after a while, it becomes like a nuisance. Some Singaporeans may like to laugh at the Malaysians and give them name tags. But then again, they don't represent the whole of Singapore. It's only a small amount of Singaporeans that are a disgrace to Singapore. End of the day, I still advocate for peace and we should not taunt other nationalities unnecessarily. Cheers ![]() SC
