LionsXII down Sabah 1-0 away from home

A clinically taken header by Hariss Harun inside 20 mins fr a Shahdan Sulaiman free-kick, proved 2 be the winning goal in a heated contest, with both teams going all out 4 a win.

The free-kick in question was a result of a nasty foul on Yasir Hanapi down the right flank, with the winger getting kicked fr behind aft getting knocked off the ball.

Sabah looked 2 find a reply almost immediately aft going down with K.Thanaraj’s looping free-kick dropping just over the crossbar, b4 Michael Baird was bravely denied by Isa Halim.

The Australian 4ward was played in2 the penalty box by his compatriot Brendan Gan, but his snapshot, though on target, was blocked in time by Isa who had done well 2 track his opponent.

It was moments aft tat when both teams found themselves a man down. Chasing a stray ball out of touch, Irwan Shah & Mafry Balan tangled, with the former striking out @ the Singapore defender in frustration. Irwan’s retaliation however, was not unnoticed & both men were given their marching orders.

The match threatened 2 spill-over with players fr both sides squaring off in separate incidences, but the LionsXII’s decision 2 sit back & soak up pressure tempered the match down.

Sabah held control of the match 4 most parts of the 2nd-half with the Singapore team opting 2 defend deep & keep men behind the ball, a tactical decision tat worked, limiting the home side's chances.

Sumardi Hajalan forced Izwan Mahbud in2 a fine save near the hour mark then Mohd Fariss Azlan Mat Isa saw his running header fr a corner-kick directed tamely at the keeper.

But Gan, the Australian-Malaysian, had the best opportunity with 10 mins of play left. His poorly struck effort, aft Baird had done well 2 work his way down the by-line & pull back 4 his strike partner, was easily deflected off target by the in-form Baihakki Khaizan.

Shahril Ishak who has struggled 4 form in previous games, put in a commendable shift, holding up the ball effectively & linking up with Shahdan 2 cause trouble 4 the Sabah defence.

LionsXII could hv come away with a more comfortable scoreline, but in the dying minutes of the game, substitute Sufian Anuar scuffed his volley aft being picked out brilliantly @ the far post with a deep cross following a quick counter.

A 2nd win in as many games will now be a huge boost 4 V.Sundramoorthy's men, who take on Terengganu @ home next weekend.

Another bombshell for Malaysian clubs
LionsXII will not face relegation while up to 4 local clubs may lose MSL spot for 2013 season

SHAH ALAM - A safety net has been stretched out under the feet of the LionsXII even b4 they kick a ball in the Malaysia Super League (MSL).

On Monday, the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) revealed tat the Singapore side will not be relegated fr the MSL, an immunity amulet V Sundramoorthy's charges will wear till the end of the 2015 season.

Yesterday, the FAM announced details of a major MSL revamp tat will kick in next year, with changes ensuring the value of the LionsXII's immunity goes thru the roof.

The current MSL format features a 14-team competition, with the bottom 2 teams dropping into the 2nd tier Malaysia Premier League (MPL).

Come 2013, the MSL will see a reduced roster of only 12 teams.

Only the top 9 Malaysian teams, & the LionsXII, will retain their MSL status @ the end of the 2012 season.

The lowest-ranked Malaysian club in the MSL will be relegated automatically, with the MPL champions taking their place.

The next 2 lowest ranked Malaysian clubs will join a playoff with the runners-up of the MPL 4 the last remaining MSL slot.

The above scenario will only exist next year. Fr 2013 onwards, all 3 tiers of Malaysian football will hv 12 teams, with the bottom 2 sides relegated, & top 2 earning promotion.

Kuala Lumpur just avoided relegation fr the MSL un 2010/2011 season when they finished 12th.

Coach Razip Ismail is not sure if the new system is fair.

"The changes mean the next season will be a very difficult 1 & we all hv 2 work very hard 2 maintain our spot in the MSL," said Razip.

"Singapore's exemption fr relegation makes it an even harder situation, not only do we hv 2 stay clear of the bottom positions, in case Singapore doesn't do well, we hv 2 make sure we finish clear abv them as well.

"I don't know if that's fair, but that's in the agreement & rules, so we hv 2 abide by it."

KL will start the season with no foreign signings, & Razip admitted tat on paper, his side could be 1 of those fighting 4 survival.

A Negeri Sembilan fan who only gave his name as Naz suggested tat the revamp could hv a negative effect on Malaysian football.

"If u look @ it, it's not fair tat Singapore has immunity, but these changes will reduce the number of competitive games, & thus hinder player-development & football progress in Malaysia," he said.

"It's quite ridiculous 2 me, perhaps FAM haven't thought tis thru fully."

Speaking 2 media yesterday, FAM vice-president Datuk Hamidin Haji Amin refuted the view tat standards would be compromised.

"We review the league every 4 years & we believe these changes tat will stay in place until the 2016 season will ensure the quality of teams in our top league, in terms of football, finance & management," he said.

B Sathianathan, coach of MPL side ATM FA, a team dubbed the "Manchester City of Malaysia", is certain the changes will make the 2012 season even more interesting.

"Naturally, no 1 1s 2 be relegated. It's become harder 4 us 2 win automatic promotion 2 the MSL. Now we hv no choice but 2 finish as champions," he said.

The Malaysia Cup(also known as Astro Malaysia FA Cup) is the 23rd season of the Malaysia FA Cup, a knockout competition 4 Malaysia's state football association & clubs.

Terengganu FA is the current defending champion.

The top 12 MSL teams & the top 4 MPL sides qualify 4 the tournament next year, but in 2013, the competition will see all 24 teams in Malaysia's top 2 tiers battle 4 the trophy.

The number of participating teams was increased fr 30 to 32 & becos of tis, the defending champions & runners up in the 1st round would not receive byes as in previous seasons.

the 1st 2 rounds(Round of 32 & Round of 16) would be single matches.
The quarter finals & semi finals would be played over 2 legs while the final will be played @ National Stadium, Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, on Saturday, 19 May 2012.

Cambodian outfit Preah Khan Reach hv been invited 4 the 1st time.

The winner of the 2012 edition will qualify for the 2013 AFC Cup.

In the Round of 32, the Singapore LIONSXII would come up against UiTM FC on 18 February 2012.
Universiti Teknologi MARA Football Club also known as UiTM FC is a team playing in Malaysia FAM League.

If Singapore wins the Malaysia Cup how? We qualify for the 2013 AFC Cup under Malaysia's quota in the AFC Cup? The Malaysians will sure complain right? If their Harimau Muda team wins the S league or Cup, do they qualify under our quota too? Really confusing, kind of weird.

Seriously I doubt we can score 4.....
If Terengganu hoot 3, we will be in deep sh*t.

I think LionXII better don't take things for granted after winning 2 matches n are at home.

I feel something bad about this match.....I hope I'm wrong.
