Dear The Real Singapore,

I'm a Singaporean, working overseas for the moment (before this, I spent most of the period since 1999 in uni overseas). I made a recent visit back to Singapore and was shocked to see a homeless elderly Chinese woman amidst the prosperity of Raffles Place. Based on her blank expression and, disheveled appearance, I think she might have lost her mind. I'm quite sad to see the worsening rich-poor divide in Singapore. Thanks to your website, I've been aware that things in Singapore have been getting worse for some time now, but wasn't aware it was this bad.

Forty and nine years ago, our fathers brought forth to Asia a new nation, conceived in meritocracy, and dedicated to the proposition that all men should be granted equal opportunities in life, regardless of their creed or background.

Now we are engaged in a great social struggle, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met at a critical junction of that struggle. We have come to highlight that the First World infrastructure and economy that we built for our nation through our blood, toil, tears and sweat is now being overrun by an uncontrolled influx of foreign workers who have driven the cost of living to an unacceptable extreme. It is altogether fitting and proper for our children that we should do this.

But in a larger sense, the real threat to Singapore’s future is coming from within. The craven cowards of the uncaring, elitist PAP have dedicated themselves to the worship of profit and have sold our nation out to the dollar sign - at the expense of the poor and homeless, the huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched jobless.

We Singaporeans will not forget the achievements brought forth during an earlier era of nation-building, but it is for us – the future of the country - to be dedicated here to the unfinished work of securing the future of Singapore for our children. It is for us to be here, to affirm that the PAP has become the national disgrace of Singapore, as a result of which our nation has become the laughing stock of the world – that we here highly resolve that the efforts at nation-building shall not be in vain, that this nation shall have a new birth of freedom, and that this party of the rich, by the rich, for the rich, shall not prevail over the people of Singapore.
