FIFA World Cup 2014

The 2014 FIFA WC will be the 20th FIFA WC, an international association football tournament tat is scheduled 2 take place in June/July 2014 in Brazil.

Tis will be the 2nd time the country has hosted the competition, the 1st being the 1950 FIFA WC. Brazil will become the 5th country 2 hv hosted the FIFA WC twice, aft Mexico, Italy, France & Germany. It will be the 1st WC 2 be held in South America since the 1978 FIFA WC in Argentina, the 1st time 2 consecutive WCs r staged outside Europe & the 1st time 2 consecutive WCs r staged in the Southern Hemisphere (the 2010 FIFA WC was held in South Africa).

On 7 March 2003, FIFA announced tat the tournament would be held in South America 4 the 1st time since Argentina hosted the competition in 1978, in line with its policy of rotating the right 2 host the WC amongst different confederations. On 3 June 2003, CONMEBOL announced tat Argentina, Brazil & Colombia wanted 2 host the 2014 WC finals. By 17 March 2004, the CONMEBOL associations had voted unanimously 2 adopt Brazil as their sole candidate.

Brazil formally declared its candidacy in December 2006 & Colombia followed a few days later. The Argentina bid never materialized. On 11 April 2007, Colombia officially withdrew its bid, Francisco Santos Calderón the vice president of Colombia announced tat instead Colombia would be hosting the 2011 FIFA U-20 WC. With tis development, Brazil became the only official candidate 2 host the 2014 event. Brazil won the right 2 host the event on 30 October 2007 as the only country 2 enter a bid.

The 2014 FIFA World Cup will feature 32 teams. 1 place has been allocated 2 the hosts, Brazil. As in 2006 & 2010, no automatic place is given 2 the defending champions (Spain). The remaining 31 places will be determined by a qualification process, in which entrants fr among the other 207 teams fr the 6 FIFA confederations will compete. As in the past, most qualification will be determined within these confederations, with a limited number of inter-confederation play-offs occurring @ the end of the process.

2 date, Brunei, Bhutan, Guam & Mauritania r confirmed as having not entered.

The qualification draw for the 2014 World Cup will be held at the Marina da Glória in Rio de Janeiro on 30 July 2011. As the host nation, Brazil qualify automatically 4 the tournament.

On 3 March 2011 FIFA decided 2 distribute places in the final tournament:
Europe (UEFA) - 13 places
Asia (AFC) - 4 guaranteed places + 1 place in play-off
Africa (CAF) - 5 places
North America, Central America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF) - 3 guaranteed places + 1 place in play-off
South America (CONMEBOL) - 4 guaranteed places + 1 place in play-off + Brazil qualified as host nation
Oceania (OFC) - 1 place in play-off
The pairings in play-off games will be determined prior 2 the main draw, taking place on 29 July 2011 in Rio de Janeiro @ a press conference following the meeting of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil Organising Committee.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_FIFA_World_Cup

UEFA & CAF hv a guaranteed number of places, whereas the number of qualifiers fr other confederations is dependent on play-offs betw the highest placed teams in the qualification tournaments not guaranteed a place in the finals. A draw will determine the pairings betw the 4 teams involved (AFC's 5th-placed team, CONCACAF's 4th-placed team, CONMEBOL's 5th-placed team & OFC's 1st-placed team).

Re: FIFA World Cup 2014

Confederation qualification processes -

AFC
On 13 August 2010 the AFC announced a proposed format 4 the qualifiers tat was identical 2 tat 4 the 2010 finals, even though the final number of qualifiers had not been determined. A final format, with the initial stages modified slightly fr 2010, was announced in March 2011.

Qualification begins with 2 sets of 2-leg knock-out qualification rounds - the 1st held on 29 June/3 July 2011 & the 2nd on 23/28 July - reducing the number of teams in the main draw to 20. As in the 2010 format, the 3rd stage consists of 5 groups of 4 teams (with matches held betw September 2011 & February 2012) with the top 2 in each group advancing to 2 groups of 5 tat will play a further group stage during 2012. The top 2 teams in each group qualify 4 the 2014 finals directly, with the 2 3rd-placed teams playing-off 4 a chance 2 qualify via a further inter-confederation qualifying tie.

The draw for the 1st 2 rounds of qualifiers was held in Kuala Lumpur on 30 March 2011, & the AFC 1st Round schedule r schedule on 29 June 2011 4 the 1st leg & 3rd July 2011 4 the 2nd leg:

- Malaysia vs Chinese Taipei
- Bangladesh vs Pakistan
- Cambodia vs Laos
- Sri Lanka vs Philippines
- Afghanistan vs Palestine
- Vietnam vs Macau
- Nepal vs Timor-Leste
- Mongolia vs Myanmar

Re: FIFA World Cup 2014

CAF qualification route 2 WC2014

52 out of the 53 national associations affiliated 2 CAF hv entered the qualifying 2 determine the continent’s 5 slots 4 the WC 2014.

The proposed format, announced on 16 May 2011, begins with a 1st round of 12 two-legged knock-out ties 2 be held on 11 & 15 November 2011. The ties, involving the 24 lowest-ranked teams according 2 FIFA World Rankings, will be drawn in Brazil on 30 July 2011.

Re: FIFA World Cup 2014

The European qualification games will start in August 2012 aft Euro 2012.

There will be 13 European 2014 World Cup qualifiers. The initial draw 4 qualification will be held in Brazil on 30 July 2011. The qualification format will be the same as 2010. The teams will be split into 8 groups of 6 teams & 1 group of 5. The 9 group winners will qualify directly 2 the 2014 FIFA WC, & the 8 best runners-up (determined by records against the 1st-, 3rd-, 4th- & 5th-placed teams only 4 balance betw different groups) will be drawn in 2-legged play-offs 2 determine the other 4 qualifying nations

The July 2011 FIFA Ranking will be used 2 seed the teams. In consideration of the delicate political situations of the relationships betw Armenia & Azerbaijan as well as betw Russia & Georgia, UEFA hv requested tat FIFA maintain the current UEFA policy 2 not draw these teams in2 the same qualification groups. The mechanism 4 doing so will be confirmed by the FIFA Organising Committee on 29 July 2011 once the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking for July 2011 has been established & the respective pots 4 Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia & Georgia confirmed

Re: FIFA World Cup 2014

CONMEBOL World Cup qualification

The South American Zone of 2014 FIFA WC qualification will see 9 teams competing 4 places in the finals in Brazil.

The format is identical 2 the previous 4 WC qualification tournaments held by CONMEBOL, with all competing nations playing each other home & away in a single group.

In qualification 4 recent WC finals tournaments, the CONMEBOL nations hv had 4 direct qualifiers, with a 5th nation competing in a play-off with a team fr another confederation. The same number of spots hv been retained 4 the 2014 tournament, despite Brazil's automatic qualification as the host nation.

The 5th-placed team of CONMEBOL will compete in the inter-confederation play-offs with a team fr another confederation, which will be either AFC's 5th-placed team, CONCACAF's 4th-placed team or OFC's 1st-placed team, 2 be chosen thru a random draw, rather than being decided by FIFA beforehand as in previous tournaments.
