S'pore woman spends $20,000 to get the perfect smile for her birthday

A Singapore woman spent $15,000 to $20,000 to get the perfect smile for her 21st birthday last year.

Miss Simbian Chua went for a complete smile makeover in June 2012 that included braces, gum reshaping, veneers and teeth whitening.

Miss Chua, a restaurant manager, says her teeth were 'messed up' before she had the cosmetic procedures done.

She was born with a cleft lip -- a birth defect where the upper lip is split.

This was repaired when she was 15 years old, but conditions associated with it like enamel defects and crooked teeth manifested themselves in her smile.

She also had uneven gum levels, and the cola addict had stained teeth.

"I had really low self-esteem and thought this was it. I was going to look like this for the rest of my life," she told The Straits Times Mind Your Body.

She started the six-month procedure with metal braces that she had tightened every four or five days.

Miss Chua also had her gums reshaped by laser to make them more even.

Her teeth were also whitened in the clinic for immediate results, and she was given a take-home whitening kit for maintenance.

For her four front teeth, veneers -- thin, shell-like layers of material that are bonded to the teeth to change their shape and colour.

"Many friends, even people I don't know, messaged me on Facebook to ask what I did. Having a smile like this really makes a very big difference," she said.

It was definitely worth the money, said Ms Chua, who paid for the procedures with her own savings.

"It's a life-changing experience. It has not only changed the way I look but also the way I speak. I can pronounce certain words with greater accuracy," she said.
