SINGAPORE PLANS TO BID FOR UNDER-17 FIFA WORLD CUP IN 2019 OR 2021

President of the Football Association of Singapore (FAS), Zainudin Nordin, revealed yesterday that Singapore plans to bid for the 2019 or 2021 FIFA Under-17 World Cup.
Explaining the decision, the FAS explained that Singapore has a competitive team at the under-17 level.
A standing committee co-chaired by FAS vice-president Edwin Tong and Bernard Tan will be in charge of submitting a bit and overseeing the further development of Singapore’s under 17 team.

It is hoped that hosting the U-17 FIFA world cup would be a boost to Singapore football and it is expected that the transfer of knowledge on hosting such large-scale sporting events will be beneficial.

The current schedule for the U-17 FIFA World Cup is for Chile to host the 2015 competition and India to host the 2017 edition. Currently, it is not known of any other countries keen to bid for the 2019 and 2021 competitions.

FAS explained that with the new Singapore Sport’s Hub which can seat 55,000, Singapore’s capability of hosting the U-17 World cup is boosted.

On top of this, there are also another 6 suitable stadiums in Singapore each with 5000 to 10,000 seats,

FAS general secretary, Winston Lee, said that the FIFA trusts Singapore and knows that we have what it takes.

However, it was also pointed out that there is no point hosting the games unless the national team can be competitive. As such, it is equally important to ensure that the under-17 team does not get beaten too badly.

Co-chair of the standing committee, Bernard Tan said that they need to start looking at 10 to 12 year olds now and look at forming a team that can be competitive.

Separately, the FAS is also looking for a new technical director after Sloban Pavkovic, who has been working at the FAS since 2008 resigned.

Do you think hosting the U-17 FIFA World Cup will help to put Singapore on the map? Or will it turn out like the Youth Olympics and be a total waste of taxpayer money?
