McDonald's Is Closing 700 Underperforming Locations

The slogan for several hundred McDonald’s restaurants might soon go from “I’m lovin’ it” to “I’m closin’ it.” With numerous locations not meeting profit expectations, the company has begun the process of closing down those “underperformers.” In total, this will result in 700 McDonald’s restaurants across the globe de-illuminating their Golden Arches.

According to Grub Street, the closures first began this quarter with 220 restaurants in the US and China and 130 Japanese locations shutting down. The company now plans to close 350 more unsatisfactory locations all over the world. This comes as a result of sales being down 11 percent from last year, with earnings for the first quarter of 2015 being at $5.9 billion. Sales for April are also expected to be in the red.

In what seems like a strategic attempt to continue cleaning up their act as they clean out some of their poorly-profiting locations, McDonald’s is also pledging to end partnerships with any suppliers that contribute to deforestation.
