SINGAPORE: Some victims of the floods that struck Malaysia last year have received keys to their new homes, built with donations from Singapore’s Muslim community.
Singapore’s Muslim community contributed S$290,000 in funds raised at mosques and at the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS), said Rahmatan Lil Alamin Foundation (RLAF) in a news release on Friday (May 22). The money was handed over in January to Islamic Relief Malaysia (IRM), a humanitarian agency helping out with relief, recovery and reconstruction work.
The funds were channelled towards the construction of 15 homes for poor families in Gua Musang, Kelantan. Each furnished home comprises three bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, a store room and toilet, and costs about S$20,000.
The keys to the homes were handed over to the recipients at a ceremony recently. Residents also received food packages at the handover ceremony, said RLAF.
The floods destroyed more than 2,500 homes in Kelantan last year, according to RLAF. The floods also inundated Pahang and Terengganu.
