Bloody fight in Chinatown food centre disrupts lunch

SINGAPORE - A fight between an elderly couple turned bloody at lunch time today, sending diners scrambling for safety at the food centre in Chinatown Complex.

Both the man, who is 62 years old, and the woman, aged 57, were injured in the brawl, which erupted because she was unhappy that he was listening to a music player.

According to Shin Min Daily News, the fight began when the husband pushed his wife, who then retaliated by hitting his head with a glass bottle. At midday, police cars and an ambulance were seen rushing into a carpark next to the food centre.

Hawkers told the newspaper that the man worked as a table cleaner at the food centre while his wife would be there too when he was working. They often had arguments, but it didn't erupt into such violence until today.

A police spokesman said officers responded to a call for assistance at 12.02pm and classified it as a case of causing voluntary hurt. He added that the injured duo were sent in an ambulance to Singapore General Hospital.

The police are still investigating the case, he said.

The aftermath of the incident saw splattered blood, a broken tooth and smashed crockery on the floor. Diners at other sections of the popular food centre were oblivious to the fight until they were told about it.

The crime scene and surrounding tables were cordoned off as investigators went around to collect clues. However, the food stalls nearby were still operating as usual during the peak hour.

Said one customer: "The char kway teow man is still frying furiously as if nothing had happened."

Talk of the melee soon spread to the stall holders at other sections of the sprawling eating haunt.
