Should Jurgen fail to beat Crystal Palace at Anfield, his head is on the board.

Huddersfield, who are newly promoted, trashed Palace on their home turf.

Pierre.

Huddersfield is managed by Klopp's former assistant and good friend David Wagner. So it is not surprising that Huddersfield have the same philosophy as Liverpool and play high pressing football tactics too. CP just did not have the speedy defenders to counter the blistering wing attacks of Huddersfield.

Since CP knows Liverpool plays similar to Huddersfield..... I think they would have wisen up and come up with a strategy to contain or counter this tactics.... unless their manager is bochap and bohiew. :)

I just hope they do not resort to parking the double decker bus.

Why Klopp has made furious phone-calls to Ousmane Dembele

Posted by Biscan's Boots August 19, 2017

Jurgen Klopp just can’t catch a break!

Liverpool’s boss is said to be fuming after the house he’s currently renting to Borussia Dortmund flyer Ousmane Dembele has been trashed.

A German newspaper published images of the mansion, that looked like the victim of an extravagant house party.

Dembele has effectively fled Germany and returned to France in an attempt to force through a move to Barcelona – but had no respect for his current occupancy and according to the Express – Klopp feels disrespected and has tried to contact the attacker regarding the situation.

Instead of organising a clean-up, Dembele left the house in a state of ruin – the sign of someone with too much money and too little manners.

In all honesty, we had no idea Klopp was renting to Dembele in the first place, but we guess stuff like this is standard in the footballing world where everyone’s a millionaire and moves around Europe every few years.

The five ridiculous conditions Barca included in ‘£118m’ Coutinho offer

Posted by Jordan Chamberlain August 19, 2017

ou know yesterday when we were staggered by the amount of money Barcelona had offered for Coutinho?

Well it turns out the ‘£118m’ offer wasn’t actually £118m at all – unless Coutinho turns into one of the best footballers of all time.

According to the Mirror, the actual offer guaranteed us just £82.1m- with the remaining £36.5m to be paid in add-ons depending on the Brazilian’s performance in Spain.

Here’s the stipulations that would have to be met for Liverpool to have received the full fee:

Coutinho winning multiple trophies in the same season
Winning multiple Champions League titles
Winning the Ballon d’Or as the world’s best player
Winning multiple trophies and the Ballon d’Or in the same season
Payment of the basic £80m fee staggered over five years
They’ve got some cheek, haven’t they?

Liverpool have now bluntly told Barcelona they expect no further contact this summer, furious at how the Catalans have actively disrupted our best player at the beginning of the campaign.

Once the window closes, Coutinho will have to accept that he’ll need to wait one more year to get his dream move and knuckle down.

With Liverpool competing in the Champions League and Brazil playing in the World Cup next year, we expect Phil to do just that.

Too many speculation but there are no official bids by Barcelona.
Dembele is just trying to be a dick like Coutinho and created a hype that he left his Dortmund home.

Uncle really confused why klopp does not want to buy a recognised striker, he seems to think an attacking midfielder is enough as usual we have over 70% of the possession and our shots at goals is so much more than crystal palace but only 1 goal!!!!! But uncle is happy for the win

3 points is all that matters.

Palace offered very little and in the end it was a comfortable win.

Hopefully, we'll go with two in the midfield against these types of sides at home in the future.

Salah changed the game for me. We are really missing Lallana both on the press and in the creativity side.

Good debut for Robertson who was mostly excellent - a back four with TAA on one side and him on the other give us way much more than Milner and Clyne. Klavan was good too and I thought Gomez did well. Daniel tried hard but not his day and young Solanke did well.

Think we still need a solid CB and DM to make us a title chasing side though.

Onto Wednesday.

Robertson’s impressive debut, midfield lacks creativity – 5 talking points from Liverpool 1-0 Crystal Palace

Karl Matchett
19 August 2017

Liverpool’s first home match of the 2017/18 season ended in victory against Crystal Palace but it wasn’t a perfect performance by the Reds.

117918

A tight, uninspiring first half was perhaps to be expected after Palace were battered on the opening day and Liverpool themselves made plenty of changes.

It took until the final quarter of the match for the Reds to find a breakthrough, Sadio Mane poking home from close range after Dominic Solanke did well to win possession, and a first clean sheet of the season ensured three points stayed at Anfield.

Here are five of the biggest talking points from the game at Anfield.

Klopp rotates with 5 changes

For much of the summer, there was talk over whether Klopp would alter his approach of last season, where he largely stuck to the same lineup regardless of opponent or competition.

This season he fielded the same XI against both Watford and Hoffenheim, but made five changes to the lineup for Palace’s visit.

Daniel Sturridge, Joe Gomez and James Milner all represent good depth options for the Reds, while Andrew Robertson has been presumably signed as a first-team option. Only Ragnar Klavan, coming into the centre of defence, could really be deemed a genuine backup option at this stage—but even the backups must play a role during the entire season.

While the Reds can’t afford to see the Premier League as a secondary competition, Wednesday’s second leg against Hoffenheim has far-reaching consequences so it was right for Klopp to make changes.

Personnel and which players stepped out, of course, can be debated, but the switches themselves—something the boss was criticised for not doing at times last season—is a sign of change, growth and acknowledgement that this year will be different.

Then again, supporters may point to the likes of Klavan or Jon Flanagan being called upon, or only one midfield option being available as sub, as proof that depth is still woefully lacking.

Midfield lacks creativity

So, about those personnel changes. Emre Can was the midfielder chosen to be rested, which (as with any player) is fine in principle, but it left the Reds badly short on imaginative passing in midfield.

With Philippe Coutinho still sidelined by injury/unavailability, Can is the player in the centre of the park who offers Liverpool the most ability to break lines: sudden surges through challenges, ambitious passing and a willingness to get into the box off the ball.

Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Gini Wijnaldum might do each part of that, but not as regularly, not as forcefully, not as reliably.

In truth, other than sideways recycling and helping to aggressively challenge and quickly win back the ball, the midfield was nowhere near dynamic enough off the ball, nor technically helpful on it.

The trio produced just one key pass between them in the whole match. Robertson had three, Gomez had two.

Add in that Roberto Firmino was pushed to the channels to leave Sturridge as the striker, and it meant a lot of the game intelligence Liverpool rely on in build-up play was sadly lacking.

Robertson’s impressive debut

Crossing on the run from the left flank? An unheard of event last season at Anfield, but Andrew Robertson hasn’t taken long to show what he can bring to the side.

He was quick to surge forward, overlap and deliver low balls toward the six-yard box in the first half, while short corners also allowed crossing opportunities from deep.

Both Sadio Mane and Joel Matip‘s first-half chances came from his deliveries and he was solid in the challenge defensively, too, though not called upon to do too much at that end.

After the break he wildly lashed one shot off target, had another tipped over the bar late on and continued to provide an outlet down the flank.

It was an overall extremely impressive debut for the left-back and it bodes well for the season ahead that the Reds have someone to compete in both halves of the pitch in that particular problem position.

Wijnaldum goes AWOL – again

Rewind to the very end of last season and it was Gini Wijnaldum who scored the all-important opening goal on the final day of the season to guarantee Liverpool’s fourth-place finish.

At the start of 17/18, however, he has been disappointingly quiet, uninvolved and not at all central to build-up play, in each of the three games.

Endeavour and work rate aren’t lacking from any player, but when the rest of midfield is made up of players whose primary traits are generally their athleticism and stamina, more is needed from Wijnaldum himself.

The Dutchman’s place in the side is one of those most at risk when everybody is fit—or if new signings arrive before September—and for his own sake as much as anything else, he needs to rediscover top form fast.

Importance of three points

Manchester United have made a fast start to the league season, Chelsea and Manchester City are intent on spending enormously and Tottenham remain quietly effective, on and off the pitch.

If the Reds have top-four ambitions, and indeed hopes far beyond that, they can’t afford to fall behind the leading pack so early on in the season. A point on the road is fine in isolation, but to repeat the trick at home would have been worrying.

Quite aside from the Premier League race, morale and self-confidence for the team are vitally important ahead of a huge week, even this early in the season.

The second leg against Hoffenheim has long-lasting and far-reaching consequences, something the Reds simply cannot fail in, while the upcoming league games are against Arsenal and Manchester City.

Going into those fixtures only on two points, while the opposition sit on four or six, would only add to the pressure the Reds play under—but Mane’s goal ensured it’ll be far closer than that when the Reds lock horns with their rivals.

Ah Gong agree with you it was a boring game . The headless chicken is still headless chicken. Don't know why Liverpool find it so hard to find the net . This is indeed a very boring game . But most important is getting the job done.

Things to note :

1) Like the new look back four defense . Hardworking and kepta clean sheet.
2) The midfield is weak . Lack of creativity some players slacking .
3) Front 3 lack the killer instinct . Glad to see the MC King is back . Hopefully he can stay fit.
4) No point having 70 to 80 percent of the ball when you can't kill off the game .
5) Is it time to play 4 - 4 - 2 ?

Now for the next game.

After 2 matches we can sum up.

1. No easy games.

Man City supposed to beat Everton but struggled to equalise.
Tottenham supposed to beat Chelsea but lost.
Arsenal supposed to beat Stoke but lost.
Liverpool lost to CP last season but picked up 3 points last Saturday.

2. Liverpool attack is already one of the best in the league.

3. Liverpool defence can still improved and clean sheet against CP was good.

4. Only Man United showed consistency but tougher matches coming and see how they cope with injuries.

5. Huddersfield was a surprised and got perfect start.

6. Watford was not a push over this season and evident they won last week.

7. Hopefully Liverpool will add a few surprised signings before transfer window close.

Philippe Coutinho begins backtracking after push for Barcelona move fails

Jack Lusby
22 August 2017

The 25-year-old had set his sights on a move to the Nou Camp, handing in a transfer request on the eve of the Premier League campaign.

Coutinho has not featured for the Reds since the 3-0 win over Bayern Munich in pre-season, with an alleged back injury keeping him out of competitive action.

Barcelona saw all three of their offers for the Brazilian rejected out of hand, with the latest a derisory package worth £82.2 million up front, and a further £32 million in add-ons.

Now, according to multiple reports, the Spanish side have “belatedly accepted” that “no sum of money would have prompted a change of heart” from the Reds’ hierarchy.

And with Coutinho telling Liverpool “he didn’t want to play for the club again,” following counsel from his agent, Kia Joorabchian, the No. 10 finds himself in a difficult position.

Brazilian publication Estadao write that that Barcelona “manipulated” the playmaker into forcing a move.

While sources close to Coutinho are said to have insisted that “he never had the will to not play for Liverpool but had to follow his representatives’ instructions.”

You can almost hear the vehicle reversing.

Coutinho is expected to come back into the fold after the international break, when he will join Tite’s Brazil squad for clashes with Ecuador (September 1) and Colombia (September 5).

Having previously served as the model professional, Coutinho’s stance this summer has been surprising, and that he was seemingly unable to think for himself is a damning indictment of his character.

On a wider scale, it highlights the lack of autonomy in the modern footballer’s makeup.

Coutinho has, however, continued to report to Melwood for ‘treatment’ throughout his push for a departure.

And the Echo report that “Liverpool believe that he will accept his fate, knuckle down and commit himself fully to the cause.”

Speaking after Saturday’s 1-0 win at home to Crystal Palace, Jurgen Klopp hinted that he would consider reintegrating Coutinho “when there is no other decision possible anymore.”

The player’s agitation for a move could well affect his manager’s trust, though, with Klopp previously reported to have been “personally let down” by Coutinho’s efforts to leave.

But it is difficult to ignore a talent of the calibre of Coutinho, and the hope will be that he finds a new level of form when he is called back into the Reds setup.

Barcelona preparing fourth £138m bid for Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho

By Sky Sports News
Last Updated: 23/08/17 8:08am

Barcelona are preparing a fourth bid for Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho that could rise to £138m.

Sky Sports News understands that contrary to reports suggesting Barcelona and Coutinho are giving up hope of securing a move before the summer window closes, the Catalan club are preparing to test Liverpool's resolve once more with an initial payment of £101m up front - with £37m in bonuses.

One source in Spain has told Sky Sports News: "Philippe has never been more determined to leave Liverpool.

"To suggest Barca are thinking of backing out and calling it a day, is absolute nonsense.

"They're all in now; their cards are on the table and they'll never give up the fight."

The £37m in add-ons are understood to be linked to Champions League appearances and would be expected to be easily achievable, were he to move to the Nou Camp.

Looks like Barca is in trouble.

Big fiasco over Neymar, that lawsuit probably ain't going to fly, plus latest photos of Neymar together with some Barca players seems to show the finger at Barca.

Barca fans not happy at the high price the club just paid for Spurs failure Paulinho and also supposed €150m bid for Dortmund's Dembele.

But it get's worse because it now seems like Barca lied when it claimed Messi had signed on the dotted line with regards to his new contract. Apparently not true and in the next window transfer in January, Messi shall become a free agent.

So, Coutinho can leave for Barca but not on the cheap. None of this £35-40m "add-ons" shit that shall probably never materialise and no 5 year payment plan either. Barca have the money from the Neymar sale, so if they really want Coutinho they are going to have to pay up in full, £130m take it or leave it.

That is the price Barca have to pay for disrupting our season.

Firmino

We should use Coutinho to teach Barcelona a painfully lesson. From stealing Mascherano to playing dirty games when signing Suarez and now Coutinho.

All these "big" clubs think they can walk around and divert the players mind with money because they have backing of banks or oil companies. I guess the middle east owners showed these "big" clubs who is the real boss.

Having said that I want us to sign quality players. We need to push on hard for the BPL title which I can say many fans are desperate for.

Salah has been a disappointment. He looks so ordinary compared to Mane n doesn't seems as fast as we thought. He's definitely overrated imo. Would prefer a front 3 of Mane Firmino n Sturridge (if fit) or even Solanke...

Ah Gong was very delighted with the performance and result of the team . But Ah Gong is still at the same time worry about Liverpool's defense. Again someone let the team down. This time Klopp had achieved one of his targets. Hopefully now Ah Gong hope that the team will make it past to the group stage.

Hoffeinheim coach Nagelsman commented his team was overwhelmed and players running around like headless chicken.

Once again Anfield was rocking on European night football.

Group D: Juventus, Barcelona, Olympiakos, Sporting Clube de Portugal

Group G: Monaco, Porto, Besiktas, Leipzig
Group H: Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Tottenham, Apoel Nicosia

Liverpool should count their blessings they got a relatively 'easy' draw and avoided the Group of Deaths. Must say Spurs is quite suay and will have a mountain to climb to qualify. The 2 Manchesters have winnable groups while Chelsea will have a fairly even chance qualifying in quite a tough group.

Hope Liverpool will treasure their chances and qualify for the next round comfortably.

Neil Humphreys: How Reds can survive Champions League

Here's what Liverpool have to do to survive the Champions League group stage

COMMENT

TNP Aug 25, 2017

Liverpool progressed to the group stages of the Champions League yesterday morning (Singapore time), but it was another schizophrenic performance.

The Reds beat Hoffenheim 4-2 in the second leg of the play-off at Anfield for a 6-3 aggregate win in a display that highlighted their key strengths and weaknesses.

Here is how the Anfield club can prosper in the group stages.

1. FOCUS ON THE OTHER BRAZILIAN

If any positives can be gleaned from Philippe Coutinho's interminable flirting with Barcelona, it's the long shadow thrown over his fellow Brazilian.

Roberto Firmino has operated away from the spotlight and flourished.

His intelligent performance was an unusual one for a No. 9.

Firmino plays like a No. 10. He's a creative fulcrum masquerading as a conventional marksman.

His incisive pass through the inside-left for Sadio Mane was sublime and led to Emre Can's opener in the 10th minute.

His dribble and cut-back for Liverpool's second in the 18th minute shared similarities with Coutinho's best work and Firmino's clipped cross to the back post three minutes later for Can's second and Liverpool's third was an impudent delight. He even scored, too.

His contributions were as varied as they were versatile, with Firmino frequently dropping deep to collect possession.

The Brazilian shows a wonderful economy of movement and a clear-headed efficiency on the ball. He looks for the best pass, not the Hollywood pass.

But his subtle displays should not underplay his importance.

In Juergen Klopp's fast and furious 4-3-3, Firmino is quickly becoming one of the side's most integral performers.

When future Champions League opponents analyse the Hoffenheim game, the eye will be drawn to Firmino.

The bit-part player of the past is now the main man in attack.

2. SECOND CHANCE FOR SAKHO OR SIGN SOMEONE

Joel Matip's most reliable playing partner is persona non grata. Klopp seeks to sell the only centre back capable of shoring up his inept defence.

Mamadou Sakho is a seasoned France international and the best of the bad options currently available to Liverpool.

The 27-year-old remains out of favour, with the club eager to offload a mercurial talent cursed with a temperament less reliable than Dejan Lovren in the box.

But Klopp needs to make a radical decision before the transfer window closes because the wheels have fallen off the Lovren-Matip tandem.

Even against Hoffenheim's kamikaze line-up, Liverpool's central defence was the obvious weak spot, sensitive to the slightest touch.

Lovren treated the ball as if it were toxic, gently prodding it back to the opponents ahead of their first goal.

Hoffenheim's second was essentially a free header at a set-piece.

The Reds' knack for self-destruction remains exasperating, always threatening to concede as many as they score.

Klopp and Sakho's fractured relationship is supposedly beyond repair.

So the pair must either "make nice" to prop up the back four or Klopp calls it quits and signs an immediate replacement.

3. THREE OF A KIND

Coutinho's enforced absence now presents Klopp with a welcome selection headache.

Liverpool's effervescent display leaves the team's most naturally gifted footballer with no obvious position.

Mane, Firmino and Mohamed Salah played with an attacking swagger not witnessed at Anfield since the title-challenging heyday of Daniel Sturridge, Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling.

Back then, Coutinho was a second-tier superstar playing behind the front three, literally and metaphorically.

Against Hoffenheim, Georginio Wijnaldum occupied that role and Coutinho is obviously an upgrade on the erratic Dutch midfielder.

But Coutinho typically favours a more advanced role these days, either on the left side of the front three or slotting in at No. 10. Mane and Firmino took on those responsibilities and excelled.

Alongside Salah, the telepathic trio represent Liverpool's greatest assets in the Champions League.

Inventive and unpredictable, the three forwards terrified Hoffenheim. Other European opponents will be similarly fearful.

Should Coutinho stay, he may find himself in a floating role behind the front three. Mane, Firmino and Salah have made the forward line their own.

4. KEEP THE KID

At 18, Trent Alexander-Arnold should be one for the future. The trouble is he already owns the present.

Having scored that superb free-kick in the first leg, the teenager stepped out at Anfield under the weight of expectation and went off to a standing ovation.

He ruled at right back. His composure allowed Can to bomb forward and bag a brace.

Alexander-Arnold didn't score and his delivery was perhaps marginally less eye-catching than during the first leg, but he defended competently throughout.

That's a rare quality at Liverpool and more than enough to keep the kid in the side for the group stages.

Spartak, Sevilla & Maribor – A quick guide to Liverpool’s Champions League opponents
Jack Lusby
24 August 2017

Liverpool are set to face Spartak Moscow, Sevilla and Maribor in Group E of the Champions League, presenting three interesting matchups.

Here’s all you need to know about Spartak, Sevilla and Maribor ahead of the Reds’ return to the European summit.

Spartak Moscow

Manager: Massimo Carrera

Former Juventus and Atalanta defender Carrera joined Spartak in 2016, leading the Moscow outfit to their first Russian Premier League title since 2001 in his first season in charge.

Previously he served as assistant manager at Juventus, operating as caretaker during Antonio Conte’s ban in 2012, as well as Conte’s assistant for Italy between 2014 and 2016.

The 53-year-old typically utilises a 4-2-3-1 formation, but has also used a 4-3-3 at Spartak.

Stadium: Otkrytie Arena

The Otkrytie Arena was opened in 2014, holds 45,360 and is 2,109 miles from Anfield.

Key Players: Salvatore Bocchetti, Denis Glushakov and Quincy Promes

Spartak’s best and most important player is, without a doubt, former Liverpool target Quincy Promes, a quick, versatile forward adept at playing off the shoulder of defenders, and boasting a powerful long-range strike.

Captain Denis Glushakov is a staple feature in Carrera’s midfield, serving as a roving box-to-box option alongside Fernando, while Salvatore Bocchetti is Spartak’s leader at the back.

Russian Premier League Finish, 2016/17: 1st

European Pedigree: 15 times in the Champions League, 20 times in the Europa League

Last Time vs. Liverpool: Spartak Moscow 1-3 Liverpool – October 22, 2002

The two sides met in the Champions League group stage in 2001/02, with their last clash seeing Gerard Houllier’s Reds build on a 5-0 home win with an impressive victory in Moscow.

Michael Owen scored a hat-trick against a young Spartak side on a freezing night in Russia.

Sevilla

Manager: Eduardo Berizzo

Berizzo took over from Jorge Sampaoli in May, after three years with fellow Liga side Celta Vigo.

In his playing days, Berizzo was an accomplished centre-back, whose longest spells came with Argentine side Newell’s Old Boys and Celta, finishing his career with Cadiz in 2006.

The 47-year-old looks to have carried his 4-1-4-1 formation over from Celta to Sevilla, deploying a strong midfield base and a pacy attacking line.

Stadium: Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan

The Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium was built in 1955, opened in 1958 and holds 42,714. It’s a 1,586 trip from Anfield.

Key Players: Steven N’Zonzi, Jesus Navas and Nolito

Familiar with English sides from his spells with Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City, Steven N’Zonzi has gone from strength to strength since joining Sevilla in 2015.

His bullish, intelligent displays in defensive midfield garnered the attention of Juventus this summer.

Meanwhile, new arrivals Nolito and Jesus Navas, both formerly of Man City, provide Berizzo with a pair of troublesome, dynamic wide options.

Liga Finish, 2016/17: 4th

European Pedigree: 4 times in the Champions League, 12 times in the Europa League; back-to-back Europa League winners in 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2015/16

Last Time vs. Liverpool: Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla – May 18, 2016

The Reds were crushed by Unai Emery’s Sevilla in the Europa League final in Basel, relinquishing a strong 1-0 lead at half-time to suffer a humiliating defeat.

This season provides Liverpool with an opportunity to set a marker for their progress made since that disappointing night at the end of Klopp’s first season in charge.

Maribor

Manager: Darko Milanic

Milanic has been with Maribor since 2016, and is in his second spell in charge of the Slovenian side, having spent five years with the club between 2008 and 2013.

He has won the Slovenian PrvaLiga five times with Maribor, most recently last season, but proved less successful at Leeds United, spending just 32 days in the dugout at Elland Road.

Stadium: Stadion Ljudski vrt

The Stadion Ljudski vrt is the closest of the three stadiums to Anfield, at just 1,183 miles away. It was built in 1952 and now holds 12,702.

Key Players: Aleks Pihler, Luka Zahovic and Marcos Tavares

Slovenia international winger Aleks Pihler has started the campaign strongly, and will serve as a major goal threat for Maribor from the left flank.

Luka Zahovic finished last season as Maribor’s top goalscorer, with 16 in all competitions, while the ageing Marcos Tavares is the club’s all-time most-capped player and record goalscorer.

Slovenian PrvaLiga Finish, 2016/17: 1st

European Pedigree: 2 times in the Champions League, 8 times in the Europa League

Last Time vs. Liverpool: Maribor have never played Liverpool.

Liverpool to consider allowing Divock Origi to leave before deadline day – reports

Karl Matchett
25 August 2017

Liverpool striker Divock Origi hasn’t been in the first-team picture at the start of the season and media reports suggest he could leave.

After shining at the end of the 2015/16 season, the Belgian forward would have hoped to break through as a regular performer under Jurgen Klopp.

It didn’t quite happen though, and despite a prolific run of form last winter, Origi has never managed to find the consistency in his game required to be the first choice No. 9 at Anfield.

Now, reports from the Telegraph suggest Klopp may be prepared to allow Origi to depart before the transfer window shuts, if the incoming business the club are hoping to do is completed beforehand.

Tottenham Hotspur are the only Premier League club mentioned as interested suitors, searching for an alternative and potential partner to Harry Kane, but on mainland Europe the likes of Anderlecht and Marseille are also in the running.

Origi has 21 goals in 72 appearances for the Reds, but in 60 of those games he has either come off the bench or been subbed before full time.

With Dominic Solanke quickly impressing after joining from Chelsea, and the constant battle with Daniel Sturridge‘s fitness seeming to be won at present, Origi faces a real struggle for game time as centre-forward even as Roberto Firmino‘s backup.

Out wide, where Origi has previously featured to good effect, there’s an even tougher act to follow given the importance and impact of Mo Salah and Sadio Mane.

If the price is a worthwhile one given the market seems so inflated this summer, there’s a good chance that an exit for Origi might be seen as win-win for both parties, even though it’s clear he could have much more to give in future.

The legendary former Liverpool skipper is being honoured for his services to football at a charity event at the Grosvenor Hotel in London on October 2.

The event aims to generate funds for music therapy charity Nordoff Robbins and will see Gerrard as the latest recipient of an award that has also been handed to the likes of Kenny Dalglish, Pele, Alan Shearer and David Beckham.

Gerrard spent 17 seasons at Anfield and won two FA Cups, three League Cups, the Champions League and the UEFA Cup in 2001.

Coutinho would be the stupidest man on earth if he does that. So what if he goes public and airs his displeasure to the whole world. He is binded by the contract he signed with FSG and they can easily forego this investment and put him into cold storage for the remaining tenure of his contract..... by that time 2022 he would be 33 yrs and probably tail end of his playing career. Maybe he wanna emulate Winston Bogarde the Dutch international and Barcelona star player. When Chelsea signed Bogarde..... he had some dispute with Abramovic so he was put into the Chelsea reserves squad for his entire duration of his contract. That destroyed his entire career as he did not play any more games after that and Holland lost a very important player too.

Ah Gong is more worried about today's game with the Gunners . The Gunners have a very frightening strike force and Liverpool need to be at their top form to stop them from scoring goals. Ah Gong can forsee a lot of goals in this game. Hopefully Ah Gong hope that the team can pick up another 3 points against the Gunners.

More importantly, back to tonight's big game against the Gunners, I am concerned, this is a tough match, particularly if Lacazette, Oezil and Sanchez are all playing and on form. Shall our defense finally turn up and perform?!

Do not worry about Ozil as he is not on form presently.
Lacazette has to be closely watch especially during the opening 20 to 30 minutes.
He is usually quick and on fire during the opening minutes.
Sanchez is the player I am worried about.
He can be out for a long time but when he plays he is always a danger for the full match.

Winston Bogarde the actor? Never heard of any footballer by that name.

Midfield dominates, counter attack conquers – 5 talking points from Liverpool 4-0 Arsenal

Karl Matchett
27 August 2017

Liverpool battered Arsenal 4-0 at Anfield in a game which provided plenty of talking points as usual—all positive from the Reds’ point of view.

119935

A rampant start from the Reds set the tone for the majority of the 90 minutes and the Gunners simply couldn’t live with their high pressing, quick exchanges of passes and clinical finishing.

Roberto Firmino nodded in the first, Sadio Mane whipped in a deserved second before the break and Mohamed Salah wrapped up the points with a breakaway third.

Substitutions on both sides ensued to try and change the flow of the game but only one forward had the real desired impact: Daniel Sturridge, on to head in the fourth and give the Reds a big three points. Here are the biggest talking points from the destruction at Anfield.

Emre Can excellence

119936

What to say about the dominant midfielder? Emre Can was excellent against Hoffenheim, but even another level above that performance against Arsenal.

Striding forward with his own blend of powerhouse tenacity and deft technique, Can waltzed through the Arsenal defence more than once to open up chances and keep the pressure on while the scores were still level.

He took on his man, he pressed high to win back the ball, his tracking back was conscientious and one second-half recovery ended in a great sliding tackle, roundly cheered by team-mates and fans alike.

Can received a massive ovation when subbed off late in the match, with the home crowd sending a vociferous reminder of his importance to the team and the need to sort his contract situation as soon as possible.

Anfield has been his domain, and his most of all, this week.

Wijnaldum’s best performance

119937

Earlier in the week we discussed the merits of Liverpool’s depth at full-back, with competition and options contributing to improved performances at the start of 17/18.

This time out it was Joe Gomez back in on the right and he barely put a foot wrong, in either half of the pitch.

Calm on the ball, tough in the tackle and completely happy to raid forward in support, Gomez was every bit as important a performer as those in the centre of the park and the front three—and Alberto Moreno continued his resurgence on the opposite side.

His overlaps gave Arsenal countless problems in the first half against a back three, and his recovery challenges largely came off in style.

Not the most high-profile players on the team, nor always the most popular among the fan base, but right now they’re all—Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson on his debut included—playing a very big role.

Rotations in goal

Even before kick-off at Anfield there was a big talking point, with Jurgen Klopp opting to replace goalkeeper Simon Mignolet with Loris Karius.

The Reds boss suggested pre-game that the decision was merely to rest Mignolet, mentally as much as anything else, after four high-intensity games in two weeks.

Now, in principle that’s fine; rotations in goal have been expected to a point this season given the Reds have three seniors to pick from, with Danny Ward the third.

But to do so for the first time at home to Arsenal, and just before an international break, was curious to say the least. Even so, it was an opportunity for Karius to stake his claim for more minutes going forward and to reassure fans that he was a safe option, not a questionable one, when chosen in future.

That didn’t quite happen, despite Karius not actually having to make a save in the entire 90 minutes.

The German stopper did well aerially, punching one cross clear with authority and taking one or two others, but his footwork was always a cause for concern.

Three times he allowed Danny Welbeck and Co. to close him down, dallying on the ball without real reason, and it incited a nervousness and uncertainty in the crowd, if not in himself.

It’s tough to judge Karius on this game as he didn’t have a lot of actual goalkeeping work to do, but he certainly hasn’t made it any easier on himself.

The most devastating counter-attacks in the league

Liverpool are a team which loves to dominate the ball, who try to continuously build, scheme and work their way around opposition defences.

But lose the ball high upfield to this side, and it’s essentially giving away a shooting chance.

The pace and the power in transitions, accelerations into space and—most impressive of all—continually making the right decisions on the ball when in those positions, make Liverpool an incredibly impressive outfit to watch on the break.

As on the opening day, each of the front three found the back of the net—and Sturridge came off the bench to make it all four and to remind of his enduring ability as a penalty box presence.

Four goals, plenty of chances for more and an unstoppable front line: it looks oh-so-good for Liverpool in attack this season.

Liverpool have agreed a club-record deal to sign Naby Keita from RB Leipzig on July 1, 2018, according to multiple reports.

Liverpool had been tracking the Guinea midfielder all summer and had two bids rejected by the Bundesliga runners-up -- the second of which was worth €75 million, according to owner Dietrich Mateschitz.

Liverpool agree club record deal with RB Leipzig for Naby Keita which will see him sign NEXT SUMMER.

Leipzig's stance -- both publicly and privately -- has been that Keita is not for sale at any price this summer as the club embark on the Champions League for the first time in their history.

However with Keita's contract including an exit clause of £48m, which comes into activation in June 2018, the club have reportedly sanctioned the move and he will undergo a medical in England this week.

Naby Keita - Klopp happy to wait as Liverpool make real statement of intent

Reds finally land top target - but he won't feature for the club until next season

COMMENTS
BYJAMES PEARCE

Naby Keita will join Liverpool next summer

Jurgen Klopp is convinced that Naby Keita will prove to be worth the wait.

Liverpool’s summer-long pursuit of the Guinea international is over after they secured a club record deal with RB Leipzig.

Keita, who underwent a medical in Wilmslow on Monday morning, has agreed a five-year deal with the Reds which will come into effect on July 1 2018.

Liverpool will pay a premium in excess of the £48million release clause in Keita’s contract which can be triggered next summer. Mohamed Salah's stint as the most expensive signing in the club’s history proved shortlived.

Joy at landing a genuinely top-class talent - a real statement of intent from owners Fenway Sports Group - will be tempered somewhat by the fact that Liverpool won’t have the dynamic midfielder on board until next season.

But in truth it’s the best outcome the Reds could have hoped for after being repeatedly frustrated in their attempts to land Keita during the current window.

Leipzig simply weren’t prepared to lose him this summer - despite the chance to make a huge profit on a player who cost just £15million from Red Bull Salzburg a year ago.

Bids of £57million and £66million from the Reds were rejected with the Bundesliga outfit adamant he wasn’t for sale at any price.

Having qualified for the Champions League for the first time in their history, sporting director Ralf Rangnick had vowed to keep their team intact for another 12 months.

Keita informed Leipzig of his desire to move to Anfield, but they feared that if they allowed him to go then fellow star men like Emil Forsberg and Timo Werner, who had attracted interest from other top clubs, would demand to be treated the same.

Klopp knew before the Premier League campaign kicked off that his top target would remain out of reach this term. But such was the manager's burning desire to get Keita on board that sporting director Michael Edwards was tasked with thrashing out an agreement for 2018.

Leipzig tried to get Keita to commit to a new contract which would have removed the £48million clause which comes into effect next summer. But the player made it crystal clear to Rangnick that he wasn’t prepared to do that.

As a result Leipzig agreed to negotiate and it’s a deal which makes sense for all parties. Leipzig will pocket more than his release clause with reports in Germany suggesting the premium Liverpool have agreed takes the fee up to around £60million.

The Reds have also taken away the danger of being gazumped. The fear was that if Keita enjoyed another stellar season in Germany like 2016/17 he would have had every top club in Europe after him next summer.

The big attraction for Keita is the chance to work with Klopp. A glowing recommendation from Sadio Mane - the pair share the same agent - whetted his appetite about life at Anfield.

Growing up in Conakry, the capital of Guinea, Keita was nicknamed ‘Deco’ after the legendary Portuguese midfielder and he’s become an icon in the West African country.

In 2013 he was snapped up by French outfit FC Istres after being previously turned down by FC Lorient and Le Mans. He got his big break after being spotted playing in a youth tournament organised by former Celtic defender Bobo Balde. A year later he headed to Austria after signing for Salzburg and his career took off.

Klopp believes Keita is the complete midfielder and the perfect fit for his blueprint. The 22-year-old has been likened to N’Golo Kante but he’s much more than a midfield destroyer.

The Liverpool boss sees him playing in an advanced central role where his dynamism and creative spark can flourish. He scored eight goals and contributed eight assists in 31 Bundesliga outings last season.

Klop legend Didi Hamann, who has watched him closely in his role as a German TV pundit, told the ECHO: “Leipzig were the closest challengers to Bayern Munich and he had a huge impact.

“Kante is a holding midfielder who doesn’t really create or score. But Keita can really play. He can play two positions - deeper or more advanced.

“He isn’t shy about putting a shift in. He’s strong in the tackle and he’s got good feet. Going forward, he’s clever with his runs. He’s pretty sharp and uses his body well with a low centre of gravity.

Didi Hamann
“It’s rare that you get a midfielder these days with those kind of all-round talents. People talk about box to box midfielders but it gets harder and harder because the game is too quick now. Few midfielders can affect a game at both ends but he’s one of them.”

News of the Keita deal fuels the feelgood factor in the wake of Liverpool’s 4-0 demolition of Arsenal.

Now the focus turns to securing more immediate reinforcements. The Reds are hoping to land Monaco attacking midfielder Thomas Lemar prior to Thursday’s deadline.

Keita signed and joining Liverpool in 2018... Personally, I can't figure out the logic behind this.

The way I see it, after the panic fiasco buys with respect to Andy Carroll, Mario Balotelli, Christian Benteke and apparently missing out on Mahmoud Dahoud after 'waiting' a year for him, FSG and Klopp probably decided that this was the best route to take to secure a player Klopp desperately wants to have in his squad, a valuable key asset for the long term since Naby Keita is only 22 years old.

That means they are letting Coutinho go since they have Keita coming in.... just my guess :)

Keita coming in has nothing to do with Coutinho as they play in different positions.

Similar if Coutinho was going to Barca, it would not be to replace Neymar. More like he would be replacing the ageing Iniesta instead.

I am not sure Klopp will still be in Liverpool for next season if he wins nothing now.

This was why I questioned the logic by buying an unproven expensive player in advance. Dunno how Liverpool management thinks and ironically the boss agrees to this.

Barca might be very very keen in Coutinho but if he plays like shit this season, Barca manager might change his mind or new manager might not want him.... What if Klopp is sack this season or RB relegates? Is he that good that Liverpool hits the jackpot by signing him b4 Barca, Madrid, Munich or other clubs start to approach him??

Forward thinking??? Why dun Barca buys Coutinho in advance?? Refer to my replied on top....

Didn't Barca buy Neymar first but let him remain in Brazil before he eventually moved to Spain? Ditto for ManCity and Jesus Gabriel i think?

It seems Klopp really rates Naby Keita very highly and desperately wants him in the Liverpool squad for the long term.

I am not sure Klopp will still be in Liverpool for next season if he wins nothing now.

FSG seem to view Klopp for the long term as well, if not they would not have given him a new six year contract. Looks like they are planning long term so don't think Klopp shall get the sack even if the Reds don't win any trophy this season.

Nice coach Lucien Favre slams Mario Balotelli's 'negative performance'

Nice coach Lucien Favre criticised his star striker Mario Balotelli for putting in a "negative performance" as they crashed out of the Champions League at the playoff round on Tuesday.

Balotelli had little impact on the game and was on the sideline at the start of the second half when Napoli scored their first goal of the night en route to a 2-0 win.

The Italian forward was called over for a jewelry infraction and while in the process of having it covered, his side conceded while down to 10 men.

Balotelli had some words for the officials immediately following the goal, and was eventually replaced in the 77th minute with Nice trailing 3-0 on aggregate.

Favre was reluctant to speak about Balotelli after the game, but told Mediaset Premium: "I don't want to talk about his performance. It was a negative performance and he should've come off a lot earlier."

The coach then reiterated that stance in a news conference, saying: "Mario did not play well and I should've replaced him earlier.

"I call it the way I see it, he wasn't good enough tonight. I don't know what happened on the first goal. I just saw there was something between Balotelli and the officials."

From what I have read so far FSG is doing such solely on the business aspect . FSG will be saving at least 30 million euros if they sign him next year . With expectations running high this season Klopp better win something and qualify for next year Champions League . I also believe that Coutinho will be solf if Barcelorna met FSG's asking price . It is apparent no point to keep a player who does not want to play for Liverpool anymore . So now Brazil says he is fit to play for them hmmm .

Gabriel Jesus was signed before Jan 2017, actually around Aug 2016 and allowed to finish off the Brazilian season with Palmeiras before joining City in Jan 2017.

On whether other clubs were interested in Naby Keita, think they were but can't recall at the moment. Anyways Liverpool were probably more concerned that they may lose out on Keita next summer, similar to what happened viz Mahmoud Dahoud last year.

BR and Klopp are on different levels and it appears that FSG seem to hold such a view going by the way they seem to back Klopp thus far.

Finally, I say let us judge Klopp not by this season but by the end of next season(18/19). That would be 3 full seasons and I think with Keita and maybe 3-4 other key players in place(without losing any other stars apart from Coutinho), we may at long last get #19 & our first EPL title.

What is another season's wait after 27 years?!

Believe in Klopp la..... the way modern Football being play is all about pace stamina and strength. Look at the players Klopp buy recently..... you will see y? Skills come good if you are fast like Ronaldo. If you are slow you will be tackle hard and frustrates you. Liverpool this year is weak in defending. That's y a strong goalie and a strong Defence will be nice. Klopp buy lots of midfielders as he likes to force opponents to use Long balls so as to by pass the midfield. As the midfield is full of stamina to run against them and break on the counter.... given the opponents no choice to reach the Defence area. Just my 2 cents worth.

I play Soccer also but you let me met a Super speedy winger and full of stamina. I let him pass man.... I will die after 15mins............

We can always hope and dream but realistically speaking I doubt it unless Klopp can fix that dodgy defense here and now.

Actually I think apart from getting key defensive players, Klopp should also consider getting a more capable and competent Defense Coach as well!

Naby Keita is possibly one of the final pieces in Klopp's jigsaw puzzle, so I think next season maybe a better bet for the EPL.

Was disappointed that we missed out on VVD.

Liverpool bought wisely this summer - but lack of defensive cover could return to haunt Klopp

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was the only incoming for the Reds on transfer deadline day

It was an underwhelming end to the transfer window for Liverpool .

Deals for targets Virgil van Dijk and Thomas Lemar failed to materialise with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain the only new arrival on deadline day.

The Reds couldn’t thrash out a deal with Monaco for attacking midfielder Lemar and Southampton stuck to their summer-long stance that Van Dijk wasn’t for sale.

Missing out on the Dutch defender will undoubtedly frustrate Kopites the most. Van Dijk has spent the past month in exile after telling Saints he wanted to move to Anfield and subsequently submitting a transfer request.

Liverpool had to tread carefully after issuing an apology to Southampton and publicly ending their interest back in June when they stood accused of tapping up the centre-back.

The owners were adamant that the Reds couldn’t be seen to be trying to force the issue, but were ready and waiting if Saints had a change of heart and fancied pocketing £70million. They didn’t and Van Dijk stayed put.

Liverpool could hardly complain having adopted the same bullish stance with Philippe Coutinho in the face of Barcelona’s aggressive pursuit. The Spanish window doesn’t shut until Friday night but the Brazilian is going nowhere.

Now that his mysterious back injury has cleared up, Coutinho will return to the fold after the international break having failed in his bid to force a move to the Camp Nou.

Jurgen Klopp ended the summer window with four new signings in Mohamed Salah, Dominic Solanke, Andy Robertson and Oxlade-Chamberlain - five if you count Naby Keita, whose services have been secured from July 2018.

Not including the deal for Keita, the Reds’ total outlay was around £80million - a figure which will be inflated when a tribunal decides on the fee for Solanke.

They generated around £44million from sales and loan fees. Mamadou Sakho sealed a £26million move to Crystal Palace on deadline as he followed Lucas Leiva, Kevin Stewart and Andre Wisdom out the exit door.

Divock Origi (Wolfsburg), Allan Rodrigues de Souza (Apollon Limassol) and Ryan Kent (SC Freiburg) joined Sheyi Ojo, Connor Randall and Pedro Chirivella in departing on loan. The Reds have got the option of recalling Origi in January.

The business Liverpool did get done looks outstanding.

Flying winger Salah has made a blistering start to his Reds career and looks worth every penny of the £36.9million it cost to sign him from Roma.

England Under-21s international striker Solanke has already jumped above Origi in the pecking order and shown why Chelsea were so angry to lose him after his contract expired.

Andy Robertson is a left-back with plenty of potential who treated Anfield to an eye-catching debut against Crystal Palace.

In signing Oxlade-Chamberlain for £35million from Arsenal, Liverpool weakened one top four rival and out-flanked another as the England midfielder snubbed Chelsea.

As for Keita, having reluctantly accepted that Leipzig simply wouldn’t sell the gifted Guinea midfielder this summer, the Reds moved quickly to ensure he will be Anfield-bound next summer. He’s a serious talent.

But concerns remain about whether they have brought in sufficient reinforcements.

Klopp didn’t want to pursue an alternative defensive target to Van Dijk - insisting that if the former Celtic man remained out of reach he would push on with what he’s got.

That looks like a major gamble with Ragnar Klavan and Joe Gomez the only back-up to the first choice centre-back duo of Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip as Liverpool look to compete on four fronts this season. One injury in that department and the squad will really be stretched.

Elsewhere, Liverpool look well equipped for the challenge ahead.

Spirits are currently high after taking seven points out of a possible nine in the Premier League and progressing to the group stage of the Champions League.

And Klopp’s options will be further boosted by the return of Coutinho, Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne. With youngsters Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ben Woodburn flourishing, the squad is undoubtedly stronger.

Attacking wise, Klopp’s Liverpool look breathtaking, but the nagging fear is that defensively they still lack sufficient quality and depth.

Whether they pay the price for failing to address that area this summer, only time will tell.

The wait for #19 looks like its going to continue for another year.

If Naby Keita had come in this season I would have been more hopeful but as it stands without any improvement to our CBs, its going to be another roller coaster ride at the back and dont get me started on Mignolet and Karius.

Klopp really should have had a back up plan to the VVD situation, even a temporary one for this season at the very least. For instance, Johnny Evans looked like a reasonable choice or worse case scenario we should have held on to Lucas for cover.

Surprised to see Markovic still in the squad as well.

On Coutinho, expect to see him buckle down and get on with performing for us, at least for this season.

Oh well, it is what it is, we now just have to score more goals than we concede in every game!

Finally, wish MaMa Sakho all the best, pity things did not work out for him at Anfield.

Virgil van Dijk stays.
Lemar stays.
Coutinho stays.

We strengthen the attack but failed on the defence.
No problem if Southampton does not want to sell just like we did not want to sell Coutinho.
Where is the back up plan?!

We want to score goals in the league but we are going to conced too.
What happens if Matip or Lovren picks up an injury?
Klavan or Gomez is going to cover?

The inside story of why Liverpool simply couldn't buckle and sell Philippe Coutinho to a man they used to know

John W Henry personally intervened to ensure Coutinho was going nowhere, and Simon Hughes explains why...

Five years separates two stories involving the same characters; one prevalent in this country, the another not so well known. They are tales that go some way towards explaining why Barcelona were so forceful in their attempt to sign Philippe Coutinho but ultimately, why their attempt will prove not to be quite forceful enough.

It was in July 2012 when Pep Segura, then the technical manager at Liverpool’s academy, ended his three-year association at the club after previously being told by Liverpool’s owner, John W. Henry, he had earned a promotion.

Before Brendan Rodgers became Liverpool’s manager, Henry and Segura held a three-hour meeting and it was concluded that Segura would become Liverpool’s new sporting director, filling the administrative space left behind by Damien Comolli’s sacking a few months earlier.

Rodgers, though, had other ideas, insisting his own appointment would not involve another tier of management above him. For Segura – a decent man, and someone respected inside Liverpool particularly for his contribution towards the development of Raheem Sterling – there was reasonable embarrassment when he arrived at Melwood for the start of pre-season training only to find out then there would be no place for him in the new set-up.

Despite his efforts to contact Henry about his proposed fresh responsibilities, the line of communication had gone stone cold since Rodgers’s arrival. Though he expected that plans had changed, Segura was upset and angry that he had found out this way and so, on that July morning, rather than driving to the academy in Kirkby as he had been told to by Rodgers, he resigned on the spot – though the announcement of his departure was made a month later.

Those who knew Segura best from his time at Liverpool describe him as a professional and so, his hurt was understandable considering he had been treated without the necessary level of respect. Sources in Catalonia, meanwhile, say Segura has a long memory. Now Barcelona’s general manager having returned to the club where he built his coaching reputation, and as the person overseeing player recruitment, it is told he has viewed the signing of Coutinho as a personal mission.

While Coutinho is seen as a long-term successor for the fading Andrés Iniesta, the whiplash of his own departure from Liverpool still stings and it is said he would like nothing better than to expose Fenway Sports Group’s collective stance over Coutinho’s future as total mush.

It was a small but significant detail when Fenway released a “definitive” statement earlier this month, outlining that Coutinho would not be sold, this was not a statement released by Liverpool FC but by its ownership group, a statement, indeed, that was not signed off by any person in particular as they often are when something important is announced

Hour-by-hour, day-to-day, week-to-week, Henry does not have much involvement in the decision-making processes at the club and instead, key issues are dealt with by Jürgen Klopp, Michael Edwards, Liverpool’s sporting director, and Mike Gordon, Fenway’s president.

Henry only intervenes when he really needs to and this was one of his calls. Before Coutinho had submitted his transfer request, Henry knew that his scan, taken on Tuesday August 8, for mysterious back strain had returned without obvious signs of injury. He knew as well that two days later a 3pm meeting involving Edwards and Coutinho’s representatives had not gone well at all. Any owner of a well-run football club should also be informed and be able to imagine what might follow when a star player signs a new five year-contract – as Coutinho did in January – but proceeds to only agree a short-term lease on his home, especially when it has already been reported that Barcelona are interested in him.

Those that have dealt with Henry regularly know how he is capable of brain lapses, instances where he has appeared completely engrossed on a subject one moment and unreachable the next. Particularly relating to Liverpool matters, perhaps living on the other side of an ocean while running a business empire where Anfield forms only a part of his thoughts contributes towards the way he approaches things. Perhaps, indeed, this is why Segura found himself isolated very quickly from what seemed a position of promise.

Henry’s distance from Merseyside has not helped in the past because he has not been around to cast judgements for himself. He has instead relied on the opinions of his appointments, which have been bad ones too often – meaning that he has only acted when it has been too late, contributing towards a generally negative impression of his and Fenway’s intentions.

Having decided that Coutinho would stay, he could not afford to back down particularly when the transfer market did not map out exactly the way Liverpool or its febrile supporter base would have wanted in terms of incomings. Fenway have been determined to change Liverpool’s reputation and by not relenting to Coutinho’s wishes, for the time being at least, it sends a message to their own players as well as rivals that this is not a selling club.

Any other outcome would have been received as deception and from then on, it is hard to see how any of the messages coming out of Liverpool would ever be trusted again

One thing I have noticed this transfer window is why Liverpool spend so much time on one player/target ? don't they have other options ? Secondly why didn't Liverpool approach the clubs to enquire if the player is for sale or not ? If for sale at what price the selling club is willing to accept ? Clubs keep on rejecting Liverpool's bid for that particular player really making Liverpool look bad . Glad to see that Sahko is finally off Liverpool's books. I am sure he will be back to hound Liverpool . But then I wish him all the best at his new club.

Frankly, how u know the transfer committee is not approaching other players? Most transfers are make between clubs... there is no rule stating, they must release the news. Liverpool might have approach other players, it is just that Liverpool does not voice it out.

BTW, most transfer speculations/rumours are from medias. Fake or real, this is what readers and fans want to read.

Club has no obligation to give a definite answer. All players are for sales, it is whether the price is right. I do not see how Liverpool looks bad... Big clubs like Barca, Man City, Chelsea were rejected many times. How bad can this be?

Viz Coutinho, I put the blame squarely on Barca.

For all their glory and pedigree, Barca have shown themselves to be a club that is without any integrity and ethics. A club prepared to lie through the skin of their teeth. A shitty club that has to rely on Messi(and even that may not last long if he refuses to sign his 'new' contract).

FSG needs to be applauded for the way they have handled this very difficult complex matter and Klopp & his Redmen should be given the thumbs up for performing well thus far considering the unpleasant and unnecessary distraction.

As for Coutinho himself, so long as he is now prepared to buckle down and gives us his all for this season(at the minimum), then we should welcome him back and move on. His talent is still obvious to all and we should fully tap on it to help our cause. LFC & Klopp have to be pragmatic, its all about a means to an end i.e. the success of LFC on the pitch.

Finally on a happier note, cracking goals by young Ben Woodburn(on his international debut no less!) and Andy Robertson in their recent Internationals bodes well for Liverpool:cool:

Just hope all our players on current international duty return to Melwood injury free and fit for the big one against City.

I dun call it traitor.... he might be groomed by Liverpool academic but he served Liverpool for 8 yrs before moving on. In football not a lot of Stevie.

In extreme example, it is like a lot of foreigners come to SG to study sponsored by SG govt. End of their study, companies will employ these and whoever pays well, these foreigners will join. After yrs of working, either they moved on with another companies or go back their own country. Are they traitors?? 人不为己天诛地灭

Lightning Liverpool and Premier League playing styles

Last Updated: 05/09/17 8:37am

121857

Examining Liverpool's rapid counter-attacks and contrasting Premier League playing styles with new Opta data...

Gary Neville described Liverpool's performance in their 4-0 win over Arsenal as "scintillating" - and their speed in attack will be a real worry for Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola ahead of Saturday's Sky Live showdown.

Reds manager Jurgen Klopp revealed he was eager to add more pace to his squad when Mo Salah was unveiled this summer and the threat of Liverpool's lightning counter-attacks was demonstrated by the new signing's breakaway goal against the Gunners.

The Egyptian hit the net just 12 seconds after an Arsenal corner to make it 3-0 and Opta recorded the speed of Liverpool's move downfield as 9.9 metres per second. That makes it the fastest move leading to a goal in the Premier League so far this season.

But it wasn't a one-off. Of the fastest moves leading to open play goals scored so far in 2017/18, Liverpool have scored four out of 20.

Sequences and direct speed

Sequences are defined as passages of play which belong to one team and are ended by defensive actions, stoppages in play or a shot. Direct Speed is progress (distance upfield) divided by sequence time.
This data comes courtesy of Opta's new analysis of passing sequences and the speed teams can move the ball forwards, known as 'direct speed'. The numbers also paint an interesting picture of the diverse playing styles among Premier League clubs.

Just three games into the new campaign there are significant differences between the sides already.

121858

Stoke and Leicester, for instance, are the quickest at progressing attacks towards the opposition goal, with their moves averaging 1.99 metres per second. However, they use very few passes to do that. On average there are just 2.48 and 2.54 passes per sequence in their moves, respectively.

Of course, that style was a much talked about approach during Leicester's Premier League title win in 2015/16. But compare their methods to Arsenal, who are among the top five teams when it comes to the speed (1.79 m/s) they move the ball downfield yet use 4.38 passes on average.

Simply, Arsenal - unlike any other Premier League team - move the ball towards the final third extremely quickly but with intricate passing movements. Indeed, Arsenal have played fewer long balls than any other Premier League side so far this season (48).

Liverpool's attacks average a very high direct speed of 1.72 m/s, with a mid-range 3.49 passes per sequence.

Arsenal's north London rivals Tottenham use a similar number of passes in their moves (4.48) to the Gunners but interestingly are much slower in moving the ball forwards (1.34 m/s). Spurs - who have the second highest passes per sequence total in the league - have a direct speed about 33 per cent slower than Arsenal's.

Elsewhere, Everton (1.04 m/s) and struggling West Ham (1.05 m/s) are the slowest at moving the ball forwards. Curiously, the Hammers are averaging a similar number of passes per sequence as Burnley and Crystal Palace - who are among the quickest at progressing forwards.

While the sample size is small and teams have had different fortunes with different approaches, Opta's passing sequence and direct speed data shines a light on a diverse league which presents sides with an array of challenges to overcome.

For Manchester City this weekend - themselves the team with the most passes per sequence - the potential threat from pacey Liverpool is clear to see.

Mane event

Sadio Mane has scored in his first three PL games for Liverpool. Will he set a record if he scores v Man City on Saturday? (Jez)

MARTIN SAYS: If Mane scores against City, he will become the 11th player to score in the first four Premier League games of a season and only the second Liverpool player to do so after Daniel Sturridge in 2013/14 (against Stoke, Aston Villa, Man Utd and Swansea).

121944

If Mane scores against Man City and Burnley in Liverpool's next two fixtures he would break the club record, but not the league record.

Wayne Rooney scored in the first FIVE games of the 2011/12 season against West Brom, Tottenham, Arsenal, Bolton and Chelsea; while Arsenal's Jose Antonio Reyes scored in his first five fixtures of 2004/05 against Everton, Middlesbrough, Blackburn, Norwich and Fulham.

That means Mane needs goals against City, Burnley and Leicester to set a new Premier League record.

Longest goalscoring run from start of a PL season

Jose Antonio Reyes Arsenal 2004/05 5

Congrats to Mo Salah for been the Liverpool Player of the Month for August. Better than those flop like Benteke.

Stats Prove Liverpool Star Is Bargain Signing of the Season After Fine 1st Month Back in England

Egyptian speedster Mohamed Salah has emerged as the bargain signing of the summer, with the announcement dropping on the same day the player was voted Liverpool's Player of the Month for August.

Salah came in from Italian side AS Roma as a £36.9m summer signing, and has wasted no time showing his worth.

A statement on the Reds' official website reads: "Mohamed Salah has claimed Liverpool's Standard Chartered Player of the Month award for August.

"The summer signing made an excellent start to his competitive Reds career with three goals in five Premier League and Champions League appearances during the period."

The attacker won a penalty and scored against Watford on his Premier League debut, and also got on the score sheet during the Champions League qualifier against Hoffenheim, as well as recording one of the four scored against Arsenal at Anfield two weekends ago.

He garnered 52% of the 32,325 votes lodged on the club's official website, besting Sadio Mane, who came in second place with 20% and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who took up 16%.

According to the folks at the CIES Football Observatory, who conducted a study of the last transfer window, Liverpool got themselves the very best deal of the summer when they signed the Egypt international.

The research looked into the greatest gaps between amounts clubs paid for certain players and what their value was estimated to be. And upon conclusion, it was determined that Salah is worth €20m more than the figure the Reds paid.

Meanwhile, the €180m Paris Saint-Germain have agreed to hand Monaco in exchange for Kylian Mbappe was deemed to be the most overpaid.

These new signings are to break-down parked double decker bus...

How Liverpool targeted one specific trait in the transfer window - and why they did it quickly

Keita, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Salah all possess something special...

When there was a clamour throughout the summer for Liverpool to sign anybody and everybody, Jurgen Klopp remained calm.

The German coach knew what he wanted and why he wanted it. Aside from Virgil van Dijk, those targeted at the start of the summer have become, or will become, part of his squad at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah was one Klopp desired from an early stage, while he always retained an interest in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Naby Keita was arguably the player he wanted most and he finally secured him, albeit in a year’s time, in a sensational late deal.

There is good reason that trio were identified and signed.

All three bring something to the line-up which Liverpool lacked at times last season.

The ability to carry the ball at speed; to penetrate deep-lying defences, or ‘low block sides’ as is common phraseology nowadays.

The games in which Liverpool struggled against these tactics are easily remembered. All four games with Southampton, for starters, which yielded no goals. The home stalemate with Manchester United, the 2-0 defeat at Hull, and even the FA Cup draw with Plymouth, all exemplified how the Reds lacked that incision from deep to break through defensive-minded set ups.

No surprise Sadio Mane was absent for all but two of those games, with his start against Hull in February his first in over a month.

But in Oxlade-Chamberlain, Salah and Keita, Klopp has brought players into the club capable of matching what Mane can do when on the ball. The Senegalese star averaged 2.5 successful dribbles per game last season – comfortably better than his nearest team-mates Philippe Coutinho (2.29) and Roberto Firmino (2).

Keita is the standout when it comes to moving the ball past the opposition. Last season, he was second in the entire Bundesliga with 77, putting only Ousmane Dembele above him. It is a similar story this season too, albeit after just two games – with 10 successful, four more than his nearest competitors.

Oxlade-Chamberlain leads the Premier League for successful take ons in this campaign, while he was second in Arsenal’s side last season with 62, with just Alexis Sanchez bettering him.

Salah has already demonstrated his dribbling ability, although it does not necessarily reflect in the statistics from last season, with just 36 completed, putting him third-highest in the Roma side.

Lies, damned lies, and so forth – but there is a clear desire for Liverpool to be quick in transition, their counter-attacks under Klopp often frightening.

Just ask Hoffenheim and Arsenal, both victims to the red arrows at Anfield in the space of four days.

Fresh research from OPTA also shows how Liverpool’s attacks average a speed of 1.72 metres per second – one of the quickest in the league. Salah’s goal against the Gunners was registered at a pace of 9.9 metres per second, the quickest of the season so far, while the Reds have scored four of the fastest 20 goals in the league.

No surprise, then, that Klopp identified players who could fit into this style. The wait for Oxlade-Chamberlain and Keita in red goes on – the Guinean especially – but expect both to make an impression and fit into what Liverpool are trying to do.

Quickly.

Cannot use them to compare as both situations were different.
Everton / Man Utd do not have the intense rivalry between them like LFC / Man Utd have.
Rooney's transfer between the clubs was amicable with blessings from both sides.
Owen's transfer to Man Utd was done in acrimonious circumstances with some trickery involved aided by Real Madrid. Therefore Reds fans were incensed that Owen resorted to this underhand trickery to get his "Dream" move..... it would not have hurt so bad if he had the balls to man up and voice out that he wants to go to Man Utd...... and thereafter he was given the title "Mr Traitor".
It got so bad that even his pictures hung on the walls of Anfield and posters at the Pubs in Liverpool had his name crossed out and replaced by Traitor.

I am just using 1 example, there were many cases of such transfer... who actually knows the real reason? Most so called facts from the horse mouth or media....

Another example, Barca mentioned Liverpool demanded 200 mils for Coutinho and Liverpool voiced out, no such business.....so now who is right who is wrong?

The media promotes a cultivated stupidity and most people go along with whatever they are told.

Philippe Coutinho joins full Liverpool training ahead of Man City clash

Jack Lusby
News
7 September 2017

Philippe Coutinho has returned to Liverpool training ahead of Saturday’s clash with Man City, following a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Coutinho was absent with an alleged back injury from early-August, but joined the Brazil squad for the international break last week, making two appearances.

After his outings against Ecuador and Colombia, Coutinho returned to Merseyside alongside Roberto Firmino on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old was one of 10 players to report back to Melwood on Thursday morning, joining full training as Klopp prepares his side for their trip to the Etihad Stadium.

The playmaker looked to be in good spirits as he stretched alongside Alberto Moreno, belying claims from compatriot Neymar that he was “filled with great sadness.”

He is likely to be in contention for a role in Saturday’s lunchtime kickoff, though it remains to be seen whether he is considered for a starting berth.

Liverpool sealed an impressive 4-0 win at home to Arsenal before the international break, and Klopp could opt for an unchanged outfield lineup.

Simon Mignolet should come back in for Loris Karius, while Klopp may field deadline-day signing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The England international took part in his first training session at Melwood on Wednesday alongside returnees Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum and Andrew Robertson.

Sadio Mane made his way back later that day, while Firmino and Coutinho were joined by Mohamed Salah, Ben Woodburn, Danny Ward, Dejan Lovren, Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dominic Solanke and Emre Can on Thursday.

Coutinho’s inclusion in training was expected, with Klopp adamant he would seek to reintegrate his No. 10 when speculation ended, but it still serves as a major boost.

The prospect of Coutinho lining up behind the in-form trio of Mane, Salah and Firmino is mouthwatering.

And it could be that supporters will get their first glimpse of the quarter in competitive action together on Saturday, in another top-four clash.

Premier League clubs vote to close summer transfer window early

Jack Lusby
News
7 September 2017

The summer transfer window will close for Premier League clubs before the start of the season in the future, after a vote from all 20 sides.

Representatives from every club in the English top flight attended a meeting on September 7, with the early closure of the summer window on the agenda.

Following a vote, no further signings will be permitted beyond 5pm on the Thursday before the start of the season, with next year’s set to close on August 9.

However, Premier League sides will still be able to sell players in line with deadlines for other leagues around the world.

This summer, Liverpool only signed Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain after their season opener away to Watford, with the England midfielder joining from Arsenal for £35 million.

But many of their contemporaries conducted their business late in the window, for example with Everton signing Gylfi Sigurdsson and Tottenham bringing in Serge Aurier and Fernando Llorente.

In theory, this will level playing field in the Premier League, though the prospect of players departing after the fixture list kicks off is still a concern.

Barcelona’s pursuit of Philippe Coutinho went into the closing stages of this summer, which would serve as an even more troubling backdrop from 2018.

The Turkish transfer window even closes on Friday, almost a month after the start of the Premier League, with Lazar Markovic and Danny Ings both linked with Fenerbahce.

Addressing the possibility of an early closure to the summer window last month, Jurgen Klopp said “it would have helped us this year.”

“There is a phenomenon and then people go looking for solutions. It makes sense that when the season is starting, planning for the team is over,” he explained.

“But I also understand that some things take a bit more time. The whole market has changed—the behaviour of people.

“It’s good to be with your whole team on the training pitch. The best thing is that the team stays together for four or five years but I know it’s quite naive to say such a thing.

“I know the market has changed, it’s become very hectic, but we won’t take that as an excuse.”
